(CP Wirepholo) Eskimo tale tells of skeleton girl By JOHN DODD EDMONTON (CP) A new book, accepted for use by some northern schools, de- parts sharply from many of the lexis being used by Es- kimo children. .The 128-page Tales From the Igloo contains 22 stories based on Eskimo legends, about nature and the super- natural, hunting and suffering WOMEN NEEDED TO TRAIN FOR MEDICAL RECEPTIONIST DENTAL RECEPTIONIST PRACTICAL NURSING This is a home- sludy course. The first story, The Magic Drum, tells about a girl who rejected all offers of mar- riage, had her flesh devoured by "sea animals" and be- came a "walking skeleton." Everyone Is afraid of her and runs away, except one useless old man. The skeleton girl and the old man become friends and she has him make a magic drum which has the power of replacing her lost flesh as well as making the old man young again. The two are rejuvenated and become man and wife, presumably no longer out- siders from their own people. The stories, edited and translated from the Eskimo by Rev. Maurice Metayer of Cambridge Bay, N.W.T., are traditional tales of the Copper Eskimos of Uie Arctic Coast who, like the other Eskimos, relied solely on oral trans- mission of their history, cul- ture and tradition. Father Metayer, author of I Nuligak, says the stories are advice to future generations about how to live a life to SIMPSONS-SEARS SEWING MACHINE RENTAL Loti of mending to do? A wedding toon? He interprets the story of The Magic Drum as the tale of a girl who did not want to be loved by any of the young men of her group. "Because she rejected love, her beauty, her very flesh, was destroyed. Only when somebody loved her when she accepted him, was she "born again" as a beau- tiful girl. And in turn, her love gave back the old man his lost youth. "You see now the very Im- portant message of this story: "woman is not fully a woman without tie love of a man. And a man will never grow old as long as he has the love of a woman." The book, published by Hurtig Publishers of Edmon- ton, sells for It contains 32 color illustra- tions by Agnes Nanogak, an artist at the Holman Island Co-operative. Father Metayer, a member of the Oblate order, trans- lated the tales into both French and English and a French-language edition is being considered, a Hurtig spokesman said. oears for 4 days only Your child's portrait madt with Eastman "PROFESSIONAL" Ektacolour Film and materials and our all mw DYNAMIC COLOUR background atsurat you full colour fidelity and breathtakint; rtaliim never before possible. Proposal rejected by voters DETROIT (AP) Women seeking abortion under "safe medical conditions" have been stymied by voters' rejection of the proposal to liberalize Mich- igan abortion laws. With 86 per cent of the vote counted, abortion law revision was losing to The proposal would have allowed abortion on demand during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, without consent or knowledge of the father. Officials of the Michigan Abortion Reform Committee (MARC) charged opponents of the proposal used "shock tac- tics" to appeal to voters. The anti-abortion campaign included brochures with pic- tures of aborted fetuses and radio and television announce- ments stating that an unborn child could feel pain during abortion.
