CHICAGO (AP) The itch, or scabies, now "is seen fre- quently throughout the United says the Nov. 11 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Three years ago the journal re- ported its spread in other parts of the world. Scabies is caused by a tiny mite and is highly contagious, but easily treated. The im- pregnated female mite burrows beneath the skin and this results in intense itching, especially at night. The Journal report, by Dr. Samuel Bean of the depart- ment of dermatology at Baylor University, Houston, points out that scabies affects all ages and both sexes. Epidemics of scabies occur about every 15 years. Scabies in adults may be easily diagnosed, the der- matologist says, but in children it may be confused with other skin conditions because of its appearance and the unusual places where it occurs Scabies often accompanies poor hygiene and can be readi- ly transmitted through a household. It sometimes is spread by sexual contact. The mite burrows develop into red, often runny, blister- like bumps and crusts on the skin. In adults, scabies is seen primarily on the male genitals, between the fingers, on the soft skin of the wrist and elbow, in the armpits, around women's breasts, along the belt line and on the lower buttocks. In children, eruptions may appear on the face, palms, soles, head and neck Bean points out that scabies is not often suspected as the cause of skin conditions in children and may be confused with such other conditions as chicken pox, eczema and im- petigo Treatment includes prolong- ed hot baths with vigorous cleansing, application of medications prescribed by physicians.
