Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 10, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta PACE 5 Tommy Banks can rise to every occasion An interview with a 700-year old Cliinese spirit or a live, for- real gorilla? A deep discussion on Llie slate of North American TV with U.S. columnist-review- er Cleveland Amory, or just pleasant listening to Bob Fran- cis, singing host of CBC-TV's Bandwagon? Whatever the sit- uation, whoever the guest, Tommy Banks is always up to the occasion. The ponial 36-year-old host of CBC-TV's Etlm onion -produced Tommy Banks Show skilfully blends conversation, music, wit and social comment into liis hall-hour series, seen weekly (in color) on the CBC- TV network. Seen ;viUi him this fall were S'.ompin' Tom Connors, Peter Fonda and Der.nis Hopper fthe acting team in the award-win- film, Easy Rita Rogers, Juliette, Farley Mowal, ihe Mercy Brothers, Bob Francis, Dan Dailey, and re- cently, CRTC chairman Pierre Juneau. TV isn't his only success, however: long recognized as a top musician, arranger, compo- ser and conductor, Tommy Banks has consistently proven successful in all his choices of careers since his professional debut, in 1950, as a 14-year-old pianist with th eDon Thompson jazz band. After four years with Thomp- son, he performed for several years in show bands before teaming up with the renowned Seattle, Wash., pianist vibrist Elmer Gill in a sensational quartet. But his first love, musical theatre, beckoned, and Tommy returned to Edmonton to be- come musical director for 14 productions by the Orion Musi- cal Theatre. The enormous ad- vantage of having at his dis- posal a 14-piece show band and a chorus of 60 singers paid off handsomely, and he began his prodigious output of arranging and composition, continuing to this day. I Other accomplishments fol- lowed, including the opening of a successful club of his own, and when the CBC opened its TOMMY BANTCS Edmonton TV station, a "tune- ful" relationship between Tom- my and the network quickly de- veloped, culminating in his highly acclaimed weekly TV series. His work for the CBC has in- cluded stints as a writer, host. grandstand show for the Ed- monton Exhibition Klondike Days of the Centennial Year. In his spare time the exis- tence of which he is prone to deny has Cen- tury JI, a recording firm pro- ducing many of the jingles and commercials heard every day by Canadians. In addition to arranging and playing on several LPs (or oth- er artists, he has scored a spe- cially commissioned Cenlen- rual baliet as well as several original pieces for stage and broadcast, including A Lady Named Kate. Recent works in- clude the orchestration for Pi- erre Eerton's Northern Sagas, and the beautiful Gift Of The Afagi. One of his greatest personal satisfactions has been conduct- ing concerts of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, with art- isis Ray Stevens, Mason Wil- liams, the New Christy Min- strels, Brent Titcomhe, and Lightliouse. He also manages to bead a publishing house, and his talent agency has become one o< the largest placement agencies for quality entertainment in Can- I ada.
