Anderson, Manager. _ / ____________ WHEN TAFT KNEW HE WAS PRESIDENT. TORY ORGAN'S PLAIN TALK Blames the Orange Sentinel For Defeat Of the Conservatives Toronto, Nov. 7.-I'ho Toronto Afull saj'H uditorially. "It seems now to bo KeneraDy conceded that the public inan who decided the election on Mon day was neither Mr. Borden nor Sir Wilfrid Laurior, but Controller Hoclc-en or the Toronto City Council. By the outside world, of course, it has been supposed that the Federal loaders wore the determining factors, but this turns out to be an error. While those gentlemen may have exercised an induonco in the early stages of the campaign, they wore not in it with Controller Uocken during the last few days. How it came about the reports from the various constituencies arc now tolling. It appeals that tho Controller felt it to be his duty to give oxprossion to his opinions npon religious topics. With this end in view ho issued a pamphlet entitled "The Duty of the Hour." Tho duty to which tho Controller alluded was that of voting against pen sometimes is. grounds. To tho I.,lboral8 this production was a bonanza. It was tho very thing for which tlioy had been looking. The demand for tho pamphlet became flattering to the author. It was impossible to fill all tho orders. Liberal managers, unablo to se cure the largo number of coiiles they needed, printed more for tholrown use. Tho.y even had tho production ti'anslated into various languages. Thei'o was German copies for Germans, and French copies for French. Condensed issues wore also circulated for those who merely wished to get at tho pit of tho argument. Tho pamphlet was discussed with groat inforest on CJueljec platfoiin.s where it secured sympathy for Sir Wilfrid J.aurior on tho theory that ho was being pursued because of his race and his faith. It also did heavy work in Ontario, its circidation among 'Gorman Catholics ensured the election of JMackonzic King and it is believed to have electod the two T,ibor-als in I'jsscx and to have dofoatod Honnctt in lOast Shncoc. It even operated in Nova Scotia. There, tho g'ovcrnmont organs printed it in full as campaign literature on liehalf of their party. Wherever it went It stirred up tho Catholic elector to vote for the government nominee. , In fact it operated very much in tlio same way as did Kov. Br, Bur-chard's Welcome to .Tames G. Blain, as tho enemy of "Kum, Romanism and KclioUion." Tho incident shows how mighty the Ciliciiinali, Nov. 4.-Up to 10 o'clock last night there had boon no hrcak in tho opliniia-tic clmractor ol the rnturns received nt the C. V.
