Then a skunk added his two squirts worth. It all started in this Florida Atlantic Coast town before dawn Thursday when a 17- year-old horse walked across the soil that covered a septic tank. The concrete roof of the tank caved in, dumping the horse into several feet of what septic tanks are designed to hold. Three fire-department res- cue men showed up and tried to get the horse out. They had no luck, so they called a vet- erinarian to bring a big sling to pull the horse out. The sling wasn't large enough, so a wrecker was call- ed in. It hauled the beast to safety. As firemen caught their breath after the smelly job, a skunk wandered into the yard. He took one look around, un- loaded on the firemen and left. The rescue crew went back to the firehouse only to run into another little problem. The other firemen wouldn't let them in. "But we compromised by leaving our clothes said one of the rescuers. He was asked to resign from the force after a woman com- plained that he kissed her while taking her fingerprints. If found guilty, the accused faces a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a fine.
