A Wise Precaution Accidents on the street railway sys- tem similar to that of Tuesday even- ing, when a car jumped' the track at the corner of Sixth avenue and Fifth street, crashing into the premises of C. W. Gray, will he avoided in future, if Superintendent Reid can prevent them. This morning he'stated that all motormcn had'been instructed to make a safety at Sixth street South, when maid-tig the west run ou that street. This will put them on their guard, and the public may now rest easy. Similar orders may be given for other points on the system where similar conditions exist. Ilia face was recognizable as of a recent offender who had been given nnother chance, so the magistrate gave him three and costs. Me was unable to aegotlate that sum without outside aid, but his friends eventually came- to his assistance, and he was saved from working for tfii days on the b-jslncfis end of a wheelbarrow at the Hotel de Rivers. An Instructive Lecture Prof. Win. U. Patty's demonstru- stration of Wireless Telegraphy, Had-; ium and Liquid Air given in church last evening attracted a largejj and delighted audience. The lecture was by far the most instructive of its kimi ever given in the eity. Prof- Patty prefaced his lecture by a short addte'ss in which lie said' it was nct-j tor to be a live man today than a dead Shakespeare. In his wireless demonstration the professor explain- ed fully the principles of sending wireless messages and also drew at- tention to the importance ol tuning1 the instruments. The civilized na-jj lions of the world, he said, were j er nearer peace than they are although lie admitted this did not in- clude Turkey. The lecturer also dem- onstrated liow it would fee possible; to light the. city of Chicago and set! in .motion the power plant at ..Ni-[ agura by wireless from Lethbridgf. I He also made special reference to the, wireless telephone, which would e-ven- I tualiy take the place of the present j system. Fttty years hence it would j ;be possible to plant cabbages or corn j one day aud cut them the following, day. Fifty years hence the mails j I wuuld be delivered in moments by j j iii'caD.s of the tube system, which was' j even now being freely used, although I in a limited sense. The whole as- I pcct of the situation was the strug- glc of genius ami science in the anni- [hilation of space and time. The radium demonstration was giv- en with the auditorium in darkness. .Stereoscopes were passed through the audience who had an excellent oppor- tunity of witnessing the wonderful powers of radium. This was follow- ed by tlie liquid air demonstration, where the lecturer showed how it was possible to freeze cranberries at a temperature of 312 below zero, and! also burn stcol at tbe same time. No! lecture lias even been given here to equal that of Prof. Patty's lastj night. Then: was not a dull mom- ent from beginning to end despite the technical nature of t'he lecture. Tins was due (o the judgment of Prot. who possesses a fund of hum- or which stands him in gooil stead while handling subjects dealing with scientific affairs. This city is in- debted to Prof. Patty for his able lecture on this occasion and to Supt.j Reid of the electrical .lepartnicu-t htTtit for his efmrls in bringing Prof. Pat--! ty to Lethbridge. [Educational lee- lures should never be ignored and it! gratifying to note that tbe an-1 dicnce was a large one, although the church should haye bct-n taxed to its utmost capacity.
