The official Indonesian news agency said the man is named Futiama, is 47 and lives 23 miles from Depasar in a hut owned by a Balinese family who found him when the Sec- ond World War ended. Antara said that in a recent Interview the straggler re- norted he had heard of Japan' surrender but was reluctant report his presence to the Japa- nese embassy in Jakarta be- cause he feared he would be Imprisoned by his government. The embassy said it was in- vestigating the report. Antara quoted Futiama as saying he came from a wealthy family, left Japan 30 years ago to study in Singapore and later ioined the Japanese army. He was being taken to Indonesia in a transport with other Japanese soldiers when the snip was tor- pedoed, he told Antara.
