C7958-tf B & J Carpet and Upholstery Featuring the new and Amazing Steam Valet Will be in this area in the near future Probe drug abuse STIRLING (HNS) - The first Parent - Teacher Association meeting of the season was held recently with President Jane Oxley conducting. Other new officers are La-Vida Hogenson, vice-president; Evelyn Sillito, secretary and publicity chairman; Helen Mc-Glenn, program chairman; and Francis Berger and Ilene Mullens, refreshment committee. Mrs. Dorothy Hirsche, county health nurse on the drug abuse said any chemical such as alcohol, tobacco, and hallucinating pills are drugs. Mrs. Hirsche said that every school has three groups of students: "those experimenting with drugs; those who were straight or completely obstain-ing; and those who were on the fence about the situation." A suggested guide for parents to help determine if their son or daughter is using drugs was given. It was put out by the Alberta department of youth, Edmonton. Suggestions were given as how to react to any such situations. Mrs. Hirsche said: "Parents must be a stablizing influence to their family. Sometime as much or more damage can be done by parents' reactions as the drugs themselves. Good common sense and love must prevail or it could make the fence - sitters jump on the wrong side." Principal Joseph Steven son introduced the teaching staff of 10 inculding two new members, Mrs. Dorccn Wilkic and Miss Carol Strong. Mr. Stevenson announced a programmed reading course is now conducted in the elementary grades. School policy on decorum and average homework requirements were brought to the parents' attention.
