Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 29, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 1973 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 17 Research stations test new breeds JOHN LAWSON Animal Geneticist Research Station How can a newly imported breed best fit into a rapidly ex- panding cattle industry? Is it best suited to sire cross- bred calves for slaughter or to produce first-cross females for a breeding program? Will the progeny perform as well on the range as on the farm? Ten types of first-cross fe- males are being evaluated for reproductive ability and for growth and carcass perform- ance of their progeny at the Agriculture Canada research substation at Manyberries and the research stations at La- combe and Brandon. Mating Nine groups of crossbreds were formed by Dialings of Simmental, Limousin, and Charolais bulls to Hereford, Aberdeen-Angus and Shorthorn cows. Hereford Angus cross- breds forming a 10th group are being used for comparison. About 50 crossbred cows of each group are being maintain- ned under extensive range eondi tions at Manyberries and an equal number are being main- tained under semi intensive farm conditions at Brandon. The yearling first-cross fe- males were bred to Beefmaster or Rsd Angus bulls. When two to five years of age, these fe- males will be bred to Chianina, Limousin, Char- olais to form three-way crosses only. The first calf crop sired by Beefmaster and Bed Angus now is being feedlot tested at Lacombe and Brandon, where postweaning gain and carcass quality will be evaluated. Insufficient The numbers of calves with- in each cross are insufficient to establish a trend that would categorize the first-cross types. However, at Manyberries in 1971, 80 per cent of 180 yearlings conceived in 50 days and in 1972, 85 per cent of 323 yearl- ings and 83 per cent of the 172 two-year-old cows conceived ia 65 days by artificial insemina- tion. Considerable calving assis- tance was required at Many- berries in 1972, but losses at calving ware low. Combined data from the Itf72 and 1973 calf crops will indicate the perform- ance of the first-cross dams as young cows. The primary purpose of the evaluation is to categorize each cross for each of the measured performance traits. The re- sponse of some of the crosses may differ under extensive range and semi-intensive farm conditions. Satisfactory The intention is not to rec- ommend a ''bast cross" as there will be many satisfactory cross- es. The choice tire individual cattleman makes will depend on market requirements, clima- tic condi'ions, his management systems, and the type of stock already on the ranch. Certain- ly, one important facet of the project will be to recognize the crosses that have the poorest performance.
