DEPNER Entomologist Biting flies are those that need a blood meal to mature their eggs This group includes many species of black biting horse and deer flies. Immature biting flies live in water and are found in a wide variety of habitats. and pupae of black flies are found only in running water such as streams or rivers. The immature horse flies and deer flies prefer the mud along the edges of rivers or while the biting midges or no-see-ums develop in almost any water or even I moist earth. We are interested in biting flies because their bites are cause economic and diseases. The annoyance caused by mosquitoes is familiar to both urban and rural dwellers.
