(CP) - Jean Marchand, minister of regional economic expansion, Thursday night called Claude Ryan, editor of Montreal Le Devoir, a "quasi-separatist" and accused him of using his newspaper for partisan politics. Mr. Marchand told a Liberal party meeting that a Le Devoir editorial Thursday signed by Mr. Ryan reflects his "deep motivation during the last few years to do everything against Mr. Trudeau." The meeting, attended by about 150 persons, was held in support of Yvon L'Heureux, Liberal candidate in next Monday's federal byelection in Chambly riding. "When one is an editorialist with Le Devoir ... one does not transpose one's own personal sentiments on the political scene in that way," the minister said. "I find that indecent and absolutely unacceptable." The editorial to which Mr. Marchand was referring said a massive Liberal vote in the byelections in Chambly and Trois-Rivieres would be illogical because it would "lead the rest of the country to believe Que-becers digested without malaise the War Measures Act and the increase in unemployment." VOTE IN 4 BYELECTIONS Mr. Marchand said those who vote Liberal on Monday will be showing they are not in agreement with those trying to destroy the country. Byelections will also be held Monday in the Nova Scotia riding of Central Nova and the Ontario riding of Brantford. Mr. Marchand said Mr. Ryan was not intellectually dishonest but he did misuse his position in presenting partisan politics. The Le Devoir editor is flirting with the New Democratic Party and the separatist Parti Quebecois, Mr. Marchand said. It would be more honest to act in such a way if he stated that his newspaper is a separatist journal.
