Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - May 28, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Jane Cheryl Hansen, a 19-year-old 5-foot-8 New Zealander, was selected Miss International Beauty at Long Beach, Calif. The blondish - brown haired Miss Hansen was named over entries from 49 other countries in the 11th International Beauty Pageant at Long Beach Auditorium. She and four runners-up will tour Japan as the world's most beautiful women. Miss Hansen, 131 pounds and 35-24-35, also receives a cash prize of $5,555. Psychologist Joyce Brothers says the little woman is just as adept at handling big money as, say, her husband the banker. She told the California Bankers Association "Our cultural training has designated that men, not women, are more suited to banking and financial matters, but this social conditioning is not entirely factual." Dr. Brothers was the first woman ever to address the association's annual convention. * * When the New York barmaids and waitresses packed up to picket, there was Joe Namath, holding the swizzle sticks. It happened at Bachelor's in, where the New York Jets' star quarterback was host at a private party. The girls walked out to join about 30 members of women's lib groups picketing the club over what they said was its new policy of firing the women and hiring male waiters. Inside, Namath called Wis own signal and faded back be hind the board to tend bar briefly, then joined a group of friends at a table. Namath, who sold his interest in the club two years ago, said be bad no comment on the protest- * Lord Thomson has given up the idea of retiring. "Never," he said jovially when asked at London when he might step down from the duties of office. The Canadian-born international publisher, who will be 77 LORD THOMSON . . . won't retire June 5, is joint chairman of the Thomson Organization Ltd., which controls newspapers, magazines and book publtea tions as well as holiday travel and air-charter operations. WATCH FOR OUR GRAND OPENING COMING SOON Queen draws blast (tenon; CENTRE VILLAGE MALL J LONDON (Reuter) - The respected left-wing weekly The New Statesman has launched a fierce attack on Queen Elizabeth for asking Parliament for her first pay raise since she came to the throne 19 years ago. In a front-page article headed "The Royal Tax Avoiders," The New Statesman says "one has to admire her truly royal cheek." The article caused an immediate stir, with the London Evening Standard proclaiming in a banner headline: "The Queen and Her Taxes: An Amazing attack." The New Statesman, edited by former Labor government minister Richard Crossman, argues that the Queen's pay claim takes no account of her private wealth. It says the Queen inherited private assets conservatively valued at more than 50 million ($120 million) and "like any other multi-millionairess she seeks and gets prudent guidance." "She must be a much wealthier woman, both absolutely and relatively, than she was at her accession. GETS TAX PRIVILEGES "But on top of &11 this, and unlike any other multimillion-Airess the expansion of her private fortune has been accelerated by public tax privileges-privileges granted to her precisely because she is not a private person. Yet she still asks for more. One has to admira her truly royal cheek." The weekly adds tartly: "A pay claim for municipal dustmen (garbage collectors) is an attempt 'to hold the nation to ransom.' A pay claim from the Queen is termed 'Her M a j e s t y's most gracious message.'" The magazine argues vthat the pay claim and the Conservative government's apparent support of it is just a way of supporting class distinctions. The claim is being studied by an Ell-party parliamentary committee and, in announcing its formation last week, Anthony Barber, chancellor of the exchequer, said: "The object of the review is to enable the Queen to maintain an adequate standard of service to the nation." But the New Statesman says: "The real object of the review, in the government's eyes, is to enable the nation to maintain an adequate standard of service to the Queen. "By adequate standard of service they (the government) mean the entire Royal apparatus-the clutch of palaces, the powdered footmen, the racing stables and polo ponies, the fleets of luxury cars, the squadrons of aircraft and helicopters, the yachts, the elaborate apparatus of consumption at its most conspicuous level-must be kept going at full blast, at public expense."
