Lang Raps Wheat Barter Proposal SASKATOON (CP) Otto Lang, minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, Monday described Saskatche- wan's proposed wheat barter with a Japanese company for a turbine as "a very serious threat to the continuing stabil- ity of wheat prices." In a weekly letter, Mr. Lang said the risks for Saskatchetyan producers and for all prairie wheat producers in a barter transaction are substantial. 'To run the risks involved for the very small amount of wheat that could be moved would, in itself, be folly. To incur these risks when there is no additional wheat sold is ri- Mr. Lang's letter said. The power generator would cost about while the amount of wheat that would be moved would be about bushels, Mr. Lang said. Japan weekly buys wheat by tender, the minister said. The only lawful importer of wheat into that country Is the Japanese Food Agency and the Canadian Wheat Board submits bids each week and has obtained a very substantial portion of the market at prices which have remained stable due to co-operation between the Canadian Wheat Board and the United States. Casti-o Suffers Another Blow MIAMI (AP) Floods pound- ing down the mountainside of Oriente province drowned eight Cubans and injured 13 during the passage of Tropical Storm Alma last week, Havana Radio reported today. And torrential rains delivered another blow to Premier Fidel Castro's already hopeless effort to reach a goal of tons of sugar on which he had pub- licly staked "the honor of the Cuban revolution." Havana radio said flood wa- ters spread over vast agricul- tural areas, forced the closing of 16 sugar mills in Oriente and Camaguey provinces and de- stroyed 117 tobacco-curing houses. Plagued by several hurri- canes in recent years as he sought to bolster Cuba's stag- gering economy with a bumper sugar crop, Castro himself ad- mitted last week that he had again failed by a wide margin to achieve the. elusive goal. "A barter transaction with a country that purchases wheat under normal commercial terms, as is the case with Japan, is a very serious threat. "It is not difficult to imagine the problems which would be faced by Canadian wheat pro- ducers if the United States con- cluded that in order to compete effectively in Japan it was nec- essary to barter their wheat for the volume of products pur- chased by the U.S.A. from Mr. Lang said. 100 Copies plut tax 1269 Aye. ieffttricfee CARE JO COMPARE EVERYDAY LOW...
