Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 24, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 28 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD ihurtday, May 24, 1573 Self-serve gas station to open in city Lethbridge's first automated self-serve gasoline sta- tion officially opens Saturday at 3rd Ave. and 13th St. S. Managed by Mrs. Willie Plomp, the Gulf Self-Serve sta- tion will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Gulf employs three persons full-time and three part-time in the operation. Steve Kelly of Calgary, below, tries his hand for the first time at filling his own gas tank. The eight dispensing pumps are fully automatic and elec- tronically controlled from a central kiosk, at left. The gasoline sale figure is recorded on the equipment in the kiosk and the gas pumps are turned off and on by single operator. The outlet also provides no-key rest- rooms, oil, cigarettes, pop, windshield washing equip- ment and paper towels. Everything is do-it-yourself. Victoria's dial-a-biis service too successful VICTORIA fCP) The Vic- toria areas experimental dial- a-bus service is so successful its president says it may cease to operate. "That's because the more successful the service is. the less it will be used." explains James Golightly, who modell- ed his experiment on a similar system in Regina. As people become accustom- ed to the service, which picks up passengers at their homes and takes them downtown, they also get used to riding buses and start to use regularly- scheduled runs, he said. The experiment was started last summer by South West Coach Line which operates the bus service in suburban Colwood. Sooke, Metchosin and Langford. "Its great for the housewives going to do a day's shopping in he says. "But most of our passengers are pensioners.'' STUDENTS Save Thls Practice Examination1 Valuable Reference Material for Exams Brazil becoming famous for double-standard ANSWERS ON REVERSE PAGE By ULI SCHMETXER RIO DE JANEIRO (Reu- ter) Through the haze of cigarette smoke, a nake cou- ple gyrates. They are making love. The scene is so familiar in Brazilian nightclubs that some spectators hardly both- er to watch any more while others yawn. But outside, newsstands have been cleared of 64 mag- of them foreign- judged offensive to public taste under a new military morals campaign. Among the banned publica- tions are Playboy, Playman, Quick, Neue Illustrierte and the West German news mag- azine Der Spiegel. Down the road, near the beach, cars with loving cou- ples line up under the eyes of soldiers who do not interfere. For while Brazil is busy with its love making a major occupation the stern mili- tary regime is trying to tight- en the reins on the country's morals. Apart from outright bans, censors have ordered publica- tions to provide originals two days before going to press to check for allegedly offensive articles. SEE CRITICISM CURB Opponents of the measures claim that the professed cam- paign to prop up Brazil's shaky morals is a manoeuvre to manacle criticism. They recall that when tele- vision showman Flavio Caval- canti presented a humorous sketch of a man who loaned his wife to a true- life authorities not only suspended his broad- casting licence for 60 days, but used the opportunity as a pretext for a clampdown on programs. Another offshoot of the campaign was a ban on top- less sunbathing and tiny pan- ties after police found a sin- gle girl parading in only the lower half of her bikini on Ipanema beach. An art boutique owner here found six burly policemen and three police vans waiting for him on a Monday morn- ing, after he stuck a lifesize naked the male spe- cies in Ms window the pre- vious Friday. On the other side of the coin. Brazilian officials think nothing of turning up for an overnight stay with a female campanion introduced as the new "wife." These arrangements are perfectly acceptable in a country where divorce is banned. At plush nightclubs, with such exotic names as Ero- tica and La Come, the cur- ious can obtain an up-to- date display of the latest methods of naked petting performed with dexterous professionalism and accom- panying grunts and groans by 1he young entertainers on stage. But out in the streets, thanks to the military cam- paign, the newsstands have been purged of all literature regarded as likely to mislead the impressionable. LOST MAIL TORONTO (CP) Mickey Mickelborough of Tronto had no complaints with the post of- fice until he received a long-lost post card from England.
