Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 23, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta WwJntsday, May 23, 1973 THE LETHBRIDGB HERALD S7 Buffalo dance Indians from New Mexico's Jemez Pueblo perform the spirited Buffalo Dance at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial heid every August In Gallup, New Mexico. More than 30 Southwestern tri'bes attend the annual event. Indian culture enriches U.S. southwest When the Spanish Conquis- tadores invaded the sunbaked American Southwest in the 16th century in search of elu- sive cities of gold, they found, not instant riches, but a wealth of ancient Indian civilizations. In this same Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado region they also came upon many long-abandoned settlements, their elaborate multi-family; multi-storey dwellings of cky and stone echoing to the wind and sand. The zenith of this adobe- using, agricultural society ex- tended from 1050 to 1300 A.D. but after that time a great many of their strongholds were mysteriously desert- ed. To the settlements they d i s c o v e r e d tv.o centuries after this exodus, the Spanish gave the name "pueblos" or villages. Supplement Today a journey in search of those Indian communities of the past winds through Pueblo Indian communities of the present. Together they of- fer a unique historical sup- plement to a Southwest vaca- tion. Key cities to enjoy on their own. and also as bases' from which to explore this region, include Albuquerque and Santa Fe in New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona and Du- rango, Colorado. Albuquerque, founded in 1706, is especially well suit- ed as a starting point for a tour of Indian civilizations of the Southwest. The city offers a compre- hensive introduction to both modern and ancient cultures at its Museum ot Anthropol- ogy, which features a rare collection of Navajo silver and rugs. Also located on the pueblo-style campus of the University of New Mexico near the Museum is an art gallery noted for its displays of Indian work. Some 62 miles to the north- east is Santa Fe, a city which was founded almost 100 years before Albuquerque and is to- day the capital of the State of New Mexico. Construction Adobe construction (a mix- ture of clay and stone to form bricks) is more prevalent here than anywhere else in the United States and build- ing codes in certain historic parts of the city actually pro- hibit any other architectural forms. A cluster of adobe build- ings 'around the main plaza in Santa Fe now forms part of the Museum Of New Mexi- co.
