The two Germanys agreed in last year's Basic Treaty to set up a border commission that is now ready to take a close look at the most formidable frontier in Europe. In September 1944, the war- time allies marked out their respective zones of occupation in Germany that later harden- ed into two German States. As a dividing line separating the Soviet from the American and British zones, the victor Powers took the old borders between the provinces of Mecklenburg Saxony and Thuringia in the east and Schleswig Holstein, Hanover, Hesse and Bavaria in the west and south. Straight line When allied officers arrive at the border in 1945, they were faced with woodland, meadows, villages and the Elbe River where they had to determine exactly, how the demarcation line was to run. In most cases they simply drew a.straight line, cutting vil- lages in half and leaving farmers with their houses on one side and meadows on the other. Until the early 1950s it was still easy to till one's land on the opposite side or to have a beer with one's friend in the other Germany across the street.
