Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - May 23, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta 28 - THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD - Saturday, May 23, 1970 Dental Licences Review Sought RED DEER (CP) - The Alberta Dental Association will work for legislation requiring dentists to keep up to date on advances in their profession. At its annual meeting here, the dental association suggested that every dentist should have his licence reviewed at five - year intervals. Renewal of the licence would be granted only if the dentist had accumulated a certain number of points over the five-year period for continuing education in dentistry techniques. Currently, the dental association renews its members' licences annually on what is virtually an automatic basis. Dr. A. D. Sparrow of Calgary, dental association president, said the new program is being suggested for the protection of the public. Pollution Action Urged EDMONTON (CP) - The province should act now on water, air and noise control legislation and not wait for the federal government, says the Alberta division of the Canada Bar Association. The association has drafted a set of pollution control guidelines and submitted them to the cabinet. A brief to Health Min ister James Henderson calls for creation of a separate pollution control department. Under present departmental structure, noise pollution is under the industrial health division, sulphur and natural gas plant emissions are under the oil and gas board, pollution affecting fish and wildlife are under that department, fertilizers and pesticides are under the agriculture department and water and air pollution come under environmental health services. Unification of pollution control and one basic, comprehensive set of regulations would eliminate conflict of interests, the association said. About 150 dentists attended the association annual meeting. CERTIFICATION PROGRAM In other business, the association agreed to co-operate with the Alberta Dental Nurses and Assistants Association to work out a certification program for nurstis and assistants in dentists' offices. The aim of the certification program would be to improve and regulate nurses' and assistants' education programs. In the same vein, the dental association agreed to work for an expansion of training facilities for dental nurses and assistants at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and for introduction of such facilities at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. SHORTAGE NOTED The association expressed concern at the shortage of dentists in outlying areas of the province. Delegates noted that, while outlying Alberta centres go without dental service, the University of Alberta continues to operate virtually the only dentistry school in Western Canada. Enrolment pressure could ease, however, as other schools come into full operation. Manitoba has been graduating dentists for a couple of years, British Columbia will be turning out its first graduates in dentistry in two years, and Saskatchewan recently introduced dentistry to its university program. Strong views were expressed that the University of Alberta should operate on a year-round semester system for dentists, thus increasing the number of graduates from its limited facilities., With such a system, the time required for a young man or woman to complete the university course in dentistry could be shortened to five years from the present six years. The House-passed bill calls for a five-per-cent increase in benefits in 1971, with a provision for future increases geared to the cost of living. It goes to the Senate, where considerable sentiment exists for further increases. The annual report released here by the special Senate committee on aging said despite recent increases in Social Security benefits about 7,000,000 of the 10,000,000 Americans 65 or over live in or near poverty. The report recommended substantial boost in the mini mum individual payment, now $64 a month, and further across-the-board increases. The House-passed benefit increases mean that in 1S71 pensioners would get a five-per-cent raise-to $205.80 from $196-for the average retired couple. The annual wage base on which the Social Security tax is levied would increase to $9,000 from $7,800, meaning an in crease in the maximum tax re duced to $468 from $394.40 annually.
