'*I bad, nothing wtaatover to do .witfc; Mr.: Robertson's B'tstory o( f iwcniiaisonry. jMo gathered .all thprobIm Just beginning to .bo appreciated by many farmers to whom?the law of diminishing returns is yearly being .demonstrated t>y declining crop yields and Increasing weed and fungus pests. The testimon}-.of;niny goodfarnwrs in recent issucB..of this jouroal shows conclusively thwt this fact is apprftc-iated by some, and, we are able to assure our readers, lading farmers it their respective neighborhoods. When such-menifeel it incumbent upon them to put their ideas and opinions upon tlie: printed liage in the waj' they have done for the beneflt of their fellows, -we may be sure that they are undcn conviction as to tins necessity for seciling to grass and manuring. Others it will be noticed, aror.strong advocates of some system of crop rotation. A careful |M>rusal ot these letters will have shown that timothy and rye grass are most in favor for seeding down; some few odvocate bron-jo, but their advocacy is hAlf hearted, while many others haw ito scruples in condemning tiiis lu.xur,iAnt grovcr, on occount of the (litncuUics c.\|)ericnccd in getting rid of it. If those experiences are to bo talcen as o fair index of Western farm practice, and we assume they can be, the absence of the mention of, clover and alfalfa cannot help but be remarked anddeplored. Grass is stat ed to be of value as a preventive of soil drifting and is also of some value in the direction of weed sup -prcssion, but those most closely observant state that grass alone will not fill the bill lis a soil renovator, that manure nuust be used in addit -ion. This opinion isbeld most strong ly by the occupants of Manitoba farms which hav been under cultivation for twenty or twenty-five years. In the newer sections, such as in Saskatchewan and Alberta, a con-siderabU numbec pin their faith to suuuer-fallow, and in dry seasons it so favorably in wet years. The point raisi^ by one correspondent that of the beginner on new land anxious to get on his feet, is well taken; such a person can get along without, unless on-very light land, grass or manure for the first eight or ten years, .although at the expiration of that time he will find that having skimmed the cream he must needs content himself with smaller yields of grain and greater dockage when he ntar -kets that grain .and then must adopt the more reasonable systent of rotation of crops, manuring, and seeding to grass. Attention has, also twen drawn to the quality of manure,.the {statement being nude tiTat manure of value can only be obtained fromiweU' fed (grained) cattle. 'Asumnving up of,, the: various' ppii|ionB;showe that, sooner or later, it will pay every farmer to seed down ^o grass (either rye grass or timothy) or better, clover; to apply manure (obtained from weM fed live stock on the land and by these methods retain soil fertility and'further to practice a rotation of crops, thus -increasing the yield of nMii4(etable;:grain as well as deceasing 4he Ipmlfrom weeds. All will not agree as to the best method of ap -plying manure, but we opine that the teetimonitM , given and the comments n;ad States, biit we licar very little of the 94,000 who wore killed by whisky and the saloons during the same six months.-Farm Journal.
