Ever since he had first visited the Smiling Pool and the Peter Rabbit had been acquainted with Teeter the Spotted Sanapiper T suspect he would have said that he knew Teeter well and all about him. R takes mosL folks a long time to learn that no one knows all about anybody. Teeter and Mrs Teeter were old friends. Peter alwavs had a feeling that some- thing" was lacking, wasn't quite as it should be, when he failed to see Teeter or Mrs. Teeter running along the edge of the water, mak- ing shorn flights along the shore a little wav out over the water, or bobbing, "bowing and teetering on glim legs when neither running nor firing. I susoect that the only thing Peter would have ad- miued that he didn't about them was how to tell them apart- Mrs. Teeter looked exactly like Teeter, or perhaps it was Teeter who looked exactly like Mrs. Teet- er. Anyway Peter was never sure which "was" which. One dav auite by accident na found the nest of the Teeters. It was on the ground not far baci from the Smiling Pool- It wasn't much of a nest, some grass in a slight hollow in the ground- In it were four eggs. They were big at one end and small at the .other, shaped somewhat like a pear. They were dark cream with spots and spotches of rich brown like choco- late. At first Peter didn't know whose eggs they were- He didn't think of the Teeters for the eggs looked altogether too big to be theirs. Feet-wppt! Don't vou touch, those eggs. Peter Rab- bit1" cried an anxious voice. "Don't worry, Mrs. Teeter, I replied Peter. He moved off a little way. "That isn't Mrs. Teeter; it is said Little Friend the Song Sparrow, whose nest was close by: Peter chuckled. "I never can tell those two said he as they watched Teeter settle himself comfortably on those eggs. "Why don't von go find asked Little Friend Little Friend's bright eyes twin- kled. "There is one time when you may alwavs be sure which, is said he. "When is asked Peter. "When vou see one sitting on the replied Little Friend. Peter looked over at Teeter. He couldn't see that Teeter looked any different than at any other tune. "How can I be any more sure which one it is than at any other he wanted to know.
