It is well established t-hat certain earthquakes tiro the direct 'concomitants of volcanic action. Lav a '.contains a large quantity of steam. which tinder conditions may cause violent explosions, hurling vast masses of lava into the air. Such violent explosions may even blow oft the entire top of a mountain, as in the great explosion of Krakatoa, m the Sun-da straits, where, what was formerly land is now covered by 150 fathoms of water. Such shocks havu caused earthquakes, the effects of which have been felt over many miles A .fa in the lava forcing its way through the crust uf the earth ma i'orm fissures through the solid rocks, which undoubtedly leads to j I earthquake shocks. j But other earthquakes are appar- j ently not associated with volcanic, action, and for those another'ex-1 planation is necessary. A consider- j able amount of corrugation of the; earth's crust has occurred, for which i various causes have been assigned, j Whatever the cause it is certain that stresses have accumulated sufficiently j to raise great mountain systems and to bring about much deformation of! the rocks of the earth's crust. It is reasonable to suppose that these j stresses may at certain times and places accumulate to such an extent as to cause violent rupture, which would be felt as an earthquake shock Do you buy them for a Summer Home, or do you buy tliem to make you a Lome 12 months in the year aud have tm income from them? If you do, you surely will buy in the CRESTON DISTRICT where the train runs every day in the year and located at tlie door of the market. can pick fruit up till twelve o'clock noon and you have this for breakfast next to GO hours nearer than any other point. NOW is the time to buy for land is going: to advance. For Full Particulars write to Canyon City Lumber Company, Ltd, Creston, B.C. The view is therefore taken by geolo- gists that many earthquakes, per- haps even, those associated with vol- canic action are due to the readjust- ment of the earth's crust to chang- ing conditions of pressure. Shocks Along Coast Line The occurrence of earthquakes along- coast lines probably carries out the latter theory. Coast lines was known that devastation had lecture regarding the conduct good Indians and it will be some j are the boundaries between land an-d liine aguin. An earth before those four come up water. Mr. Hfudrickson. of Fremont coun- ty, Idaho, is here with, the idea of been wrought at the place where it j originated. The tremor from the j earthquake at San Francisco was felt in Indiana. It is very probable, then, that the tremor -which was felt here may have been caused by the waves resulting from the shock of some great earth- quake which has occurred as far south as South America or as far west as the coast line. The location of it may not be found until calcula- tions are mado- from the records of the various seismographs stationed throughout the country. The fact that the shocks have been confined to a comparatively small area does not argue that the earthquake orig- inated in that area. The shocks felt may be simply caused by the par- spent force of di IX THE MATTER OJr THE LAND -TITLES ACT AND IN THE MAT- TER OF A TRANSFER FROM C. B. BOWMAN.
