Dr. Moss and Dr. Samuel HcCann, chairman of the de- partment of psychology at the same university, agreed that he coitus-induced release of a lormone called gonadotropins, vhich brought on ovulation, may be a backup system to ensure fertility should the nor- mal menstrual cycle fail. Dr. Moss added a caution that comparisons between rats and human beings are extremely isky, but noted that the evi- dence might explain why the hythm system sometimes fails.
