Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 18, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta PAGE Eight Canadians nominated for Eiiimys Good grounding in Canada helps TV expatriates in U.S. HOLLYWOOD (CP) At least eight Canadians won nominations for television Emmy awards this spring, and seven of them are writ- ers, producers, directors or some hyphenated combination of them. The only on-camera star found in the long list of nomi- nees was singer Robert Gou- let, who appeared on a Julie Andrews Hour which won a nomination for its choreogra- phy. Frank Peppiatt and John Ayleswprth won nominations for writing in the Julie An- drews Hour, and Alan Blye and Chris Beard for producing the Sony and Cher Comedy Hour. Bill Davis drew a direc- torial achievement nomination for one of the Julie Andrews shows and Stan Harris a simi- lar nomination for directing a Duke Ellington special. Alan Mailings won a nomination along with other wrifers for another special, The Lily Tomlin Show. Voting for the 25th annual Emmy awards now is taking place in the National Acad- emy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the awards in the entertainment seclion are to be made May 20. Separate awards for news and docu- mentary achievements arc to be made May 22. WHY CANADIANS Why the preponderance of Canadians among writers- directors-producers of the top American TV shows? An answer was found in an interview here with Lloyd Bochner, an actor who cut his teeth in radio and stage work in 'the. 1940s in Toronto, and who is widely regarded as one of the leaders of the Canadian artistic community here. "We all got a good, widely- varied grounding in the busi- ness in Canada before we came he said. "The LLOYD BOCHNER training wasn't as competi- tive, perhaps, in Canada as it would be in the States. We were allowed to make mis- takes, we were forgiven for them, and we learned from them. "Down here, the heat is pretty strong. There's a liue- D1D YOU KNOW? There may also be some- thing in the psyche of Canadi- ans that fits them well for comedy and variety-show writing and directing. They have a tolerance and a sense of wit that may bite but not wound, the kind of thing that appeals to wide audiences. Producer-director Norman Jewison and program develo- per Bernard Slade are Cana- dians who have settled here, as have writers Alex Barris, Ron Clarke and Stan Daniels. Canadian actors John Coli- cos, Lome Greene, Larry Mann, Austin Willis and John V e r n o n make their home here, as does comedian-im- personator Rich Little. MONEY ATTRACTS Certainly, the richer re- wards paid by American TV have attracted the Canadians here. A writer here is paid as much as 10 times what he would be paid in Canada for a sim'lar iob, Bochner said. But this doesn't mean that most of the Canadian com- munity have shaken the snows of Canada from their feet for- ever, he added. Talent is mo- bile and will go wherever op- p a y s of- fered. He called himself, with some pride, a professional Ca- nadian, and said he and oth- ers frequently return to Can- ada for shows. The Canadians see wider opportunities Cor work in Can- ada with the start-up soon of a third TV network, Global, Joining the CBC and CTV net- works as employers. But would they return per- manently? That's hard to say. This land of palms and hibis- cus and year-round swimming pools has certain attractions beyond work. Can Derby winner Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Kentucky Derby, tries to add the Prcakness to his im- pressive list of victories on Saturday, May 19, and can see all the exciting action on CBC-TV starting at 3 p.m. on Chanel 7. Tremendous interest is being centred on the race because of Secretariat's impressive rec- ord-breaking win in the Derby. The Preakncss, which is run over a mile and three-sixteen- ths at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, is the richest of the triple crown races, and carries a purse of more than It is expected that the field be considerably smaller than the 13 horses that started in the Derby. Popular opin- ion is that several posible en- tries have been scared off by Secretariat, a strapping red chestnut that rocketed by sec- ond placed Sham to win the Derby in one minute, fifty-nine and two-fifths seconds. As in the Derby, Secretariat will again be ridden by Canadian jockey, lion Turcollc.
