Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 17, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta m Export wheat price dropped almost WINNIPEG The Canadian 'wheat board dropped its export wheat price Thursday by almost a setting the price for No. 1 Canada Western at less than A wheat board spokesman said two factors led to the reduction in prices. improved railway performance in delivering grain to export positions and a strengthening of prices in the United States The spokesman said higher prices were maintained by the board because it was not in the position to be competitive in any case. But unloads at Thunder Bay and Vancouver have been going well and are expected to continue. we have the capability to sell limited additional supplies for shipment in July and August and the spokesman said There was some speculation in the grain industry that the drop in price could precede an announcement of a major wheat deal The drop of cents left the price per bushel of No. 1 Canada Western hard red spring wheat with 13 5 per cent protein content at 75V4 Hospital employees won't be penalized MONTREAL non-professional workers at Sacre Coeur Hospital returned to work ending a four-day walkout. None of the workers who walked out will be penalized by the it added. The hospital work- including kitchen maintenance laundry workers and nursing walked off the job Monday to protest the suspension of a fellow-worker. About 150 patients remained at the hospital Thursday while administration and union representatives met to end the fourday walkout. More than 300 of the hospi- tal's patients had been sent home since the walkout began and another 20 serious cases MONIQUEMENARD were transferred to other hospitals. REMAIN ON JOB doctors and super- visory staff remained on their jobs throughout the walkout. The dispute began last week when a hospital Monique was sus- pended for 30 days after she took four days off to move on the advice of her union representative Priority mail clear By THE CANADIAN PRESS Some magazines and hand- bills tied up in the recent na- tional postal strike have yet to reach their destinations. But all first-class letters have been post office officials across the country say A Canadian Press survey shows the backlog of priority mail was cleared from most points two weeks after-the strike ended April 26 Third-class continues to filter through ma- jor clearing stations in Toronto and Montreal. The dispute began April 11 in Montreal when several post office workers wore tee-shirts urging a boycott of postal codes Disciplinary action sparked a series of wildcat walkouts that cost the post office daily and ended only after Toronto labor specialist Eric Taylor assuaged workers' fears of automation. Still unhappy with their labor situation the Charlottetown local of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Thursday filed grievances against management that casual laborers were employed to sort the backlog there offered our men to do the work but the post office prefers to use these said Leroy president of the Charlottetown local. He also said it was not as postmaster Ross Downe earlier that the backlog of mail had been cleared still sorting mail from last month Elsewhere in the post office spokesmen reported all clear with the exception of some third-class mail. Extra help was hired in Halifax but union employees working overtime cleared pileups in St Nfld and Saint N.B In more than extra workers were hired for about 10 days to sort the accumulated and regular sorters and carriers overtime A spokesman for the mam Metropolitan Montreal centre said it took 15 days to clear the backlog An embargo on foreign mail was lifted May 3 On the post office officials reported normal flows of first-class mail but blamed delays in third-class deliveries on holdups in eastern centres Vets graduate SASKATOON Dann Mitchell Mascaluk of Alta today was named the most distinguished student in the spring graduating class at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatoon A total of 57 students graduated in veterinary medicine compared with 52 a year ago utstanding whisky is a Canadian heritage. The wheat board had been under considerable pressure recently for maintaining its high export prices independent of other countries. Exports are running substantially behind last year's level. Canadian grain commission figures to May 8 show wheat exports since the start of the current crop year have been 248.7 million bushels compared with 363.6 million at the same time a year ago. Durum exports were off to 34.2 million bushels from 42.1 at the same point in the previous crop year. The sharp price cut will mean reduced returns to Prairie producers although the immediate effect is impossible to calculate as farmers' prices are pooled on the total net profit of the board over the entire crop year running to July 31. As of April the wheat board was forecasting producer prices of a basis Thunder Bay or Vancouver. This was based on paid at the time of delivery and estimated final payments of a bushel. A reduction in the final payment now appears inevi- table but the amount will de- pend on how much grain is sold between now and July 31 at the lower price. The export cut will not affect the domestic price of Canadian wheat which is fixed at a bushel to millers by means of a federal government consumer subsidy. Since last the federal treasury has paid to the wheat board the difference between the domestic and export price up to a maximum export level of The reduction will lower the federa payments because this is first time since the subsidy was instituted that worlt prices have fallen below the level FORD Parts.
