Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 17, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Thursday, May 17, 1973 THE IETHBRIDCE HERALD If Laos peace working VIENTIANE (AP) The ceasefire in Laos seems to be working. But in the view of diplomats and bureaucrats, the prospects for long-term peace and recon- ciliation are no better than in the other countries of In- dochina. Some say it is possible Laos may wind up with Korea and Vietnam on the list of divided Asian countries. Negotiations have stalled on the formation of a coalition be- tween the United States-backed government of Prince Souvanna Phouma and the pro-Communist Pathet Lao, headed in name by his half-brother, Prince Sou- phanouvong. The Laotian ceasefire was signed Feb. 22, nearly a month after the Vietnam ceasefire was worked out in Paris. Reported ceasefire violations are down to one or two minor incidents a day, sometimes none. One source here says, though, that fighting could resume in the Laotian panhandle area where Communist-led forces have pushed to within a few miles of Nakhon Phanom in neighboring Thailand. Nakhor Phanom is headquarters for U.S. air operations in Laos and Cambodia. U.S. B-52 bomber strikes were unable to reverse the pushes into contested areas last month. Sources say the Pathet Lao and their North Vietnamese allies now control 80 per cent of Lsos, leaving the government a slen- der only a few miles the western panhandle and a wedge-shaped area of the north that protrudes into Thailand. Prince Souvanna, the pre- mier, is reported to have ac- cepted the results of this land grab as another of the harsh re- alities he has to face after a long string of military defeats. But disagreements over appor- tioning of cabinet posts and se- curity measures for the Pathet Lao still stand in the way of a political settlement. Each side blames the other for the delay, but Western sources say they believe the North Vietnamese are holding back the Pathet Lao. MP, family back from Middle East OTTAWA (CP) During the Commons Easter recess, Ralph Stewart took his wife and two teen-age sons for a first-hand look at the Middle East. A first hand look they got not to mention being holed up in a Beirut hotel for four days j while bombs, rockets and ma- chine guns blasted around them. The Stewarts arrived within hours of an attack by Palestinian guerillas. They returned to Ottawa late Tuesday night, tired from their vacation that ended when they boarded a cargo boat in Beirut and sailed away from the shoot- ing. They flew home from Cyprus. "The boys thought it was said Mr. Stewart Wednesday, referring to Martin, 16, and Kevin 15. Originally, Mr. Stewart planned to vacation in Cyprus and then decided to broaden the itinerary. The Stewarts were scarcely in their Beirut hotel before the first bomb went off next door, knocking out some of the hotel windows. "Actually, we never felt we were in much Mrs. Stewart said Wednesday. "You seem to look at it objectively.' Her husband said she was "very although with six other children back in Ottawa there was some concern about getting home. The airport came under at- tack and there was no way for the Stewarts to fly out to make connections that would have brought them back to Ottawa last Friday. The Cyprus-bound cargo ship was discovered through officials at the Canadian embassy.
