Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 17, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Thursday, May 17, 1973 THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD BEARDS NOW TABOO IN ARMED FORCES OTTAWA (CP) The days of bearded old salts are coming to an end in the sea element of the Canadian armed forces. New regulations brought in at the end cf April have ban- ned the jTowing of new beards by sailors and ether members of the forces. A defence department spokes- man said today that while those who now have beards may re- tain them, no new growth will be authorized. No beards may be worn by food handlers, those working in medical facilities or anyone whose duties might require him to wear protective face gear where a beard might hinder his work. The ban on new beards fol- lows the ban, in late 1972, on the traditional issue of grogrum mixed with water. The traditional tot a legacy from the Royal Navy has been replaced by "wet" can- teens aboard ship. Sales commitments and an- ticipated domestic demand in- dicate total exports of about 600 million bushels by July 31, the end of the crop year. But the country will be left with a slim 325-350-million- bushel carry-over by then, and Canadian wheat board officials said recently that sales oppor- tunities have gone begging for want of supply. "There is more grain that could be sold now if it were on G. N. Vogel, head of the Abortion law thrown out PROVIDENCE., R.I. (AP) Rhode Island's two-month-old anti-abortion law was declared unconstitutional "on its face" by a federal court judge Wednesday. The law, approved less than two months after the United States Supreme Court decision restricting the state's rights to control abortions, declared that life begins at conception and that a fetus is entitled to the constitutional rights of a per- son. The law permitted abor- tions only when the life of the pregnant woman was in danger. The old Rhode Island abortion law, like the Texas law in- validated by the high court, permitted abortions only when necessary to save the life of the mother. Judge Raymond Pettine said Wednesday "it is sheer sophis- try to argue as the defendant does" that the Supreme Court decisions "can be nullified by the simple device of a legal declaration or presumption con- trary to the court's holding." The Supreme Court said in the Texas case that it was unable to determine when life begins. 20 ALSO WE CARRY EXCLUSIVELY Scinitcis LUallclad Come in and see the wide range of wonderful patterns available... Phone board, told a recent Commons agriculture committee meeting. Two things created the sharp drop in supplies, which in 1970 had piled into a billion-bushel surplus. A 1970 crop reduction program called LIFT, for Lower Inventories for Tomor- row, which paid farmers to sow wheatland to other crops and forage, sliced wheat production in half and massive sales were sparked in part by world droughts last year. The second factor has prompted a world scramble for wheat. The statistics bureau says in its monthly wheat re- view that total exports by the four big wesera ada, the United States, Aus- tralia and million bushels ir. the August-March period. All but Australia exported more wheat in the eight-month period than they did last year. The United States led with a record 735.5 million bushels, up from 388. million last year, fol- lowed by Canada's 377.6 million bushels and Argentina's 87.7 million, up from a mere 31 mil- lion last year. At April 1 this year, Statistics Canada estimates there were 585.5 million bushels of wheat left in Canada, compared with I 771.3 million last year, 791.9' million left in the U.S. com- pared with million a year before, 98.9 million left in Argentina compared with 61.1 million and a scant 99.9 million in Australia, compared with 222.1 million in 1971-72.
