Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 16, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 8 THE lETHBRIDGE HERALD Wednesday, May 16, J973 Amputation treatment, acupuncture Canadian doctors may eventually use Chinese techniques TORONTO (CP) A recent visit to China by Canadian doc- tors eventually may cause nu- Appointed Jean Folster, 50, chief of the Indian band at Norway House, has be- come the first female treaty Indian to be appointed magistrate in Manitoba. merous changes in treatment in ways of re- joining of amputated limbs, treatment of burns and in- tioduction of acupuncture. Chinese techniques for rejoin- ing amputated limbs may force Canadian doctors to throw out their present Western theories, Dr. Gustave Gingras of Mon- treal, an expert in rehabilitation medicine, said Monday. Dr. Gingras, president of the i Canadian Medical Association and leader of the 16-member delegation to China last month, said he had been especially im- pressed with these techniques. The successes of Chinese sur- geons "with the re-implantation of limbs that have been sepa- rated for up to 36 hours are im- portant surgical developments.' Canadian teachings have in- dicated that amputated limbs had to be reconnected within six to eight hours. "Obviously, our teaclrings are inaccurate." Dr. Gingras told a meeting of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) that techniques with mi- magnifying lenses so that tiny blood vessels and nerves can be are being used in China to re- place severed fingers. In three of every five cases the replacements have been successful, he said. Canada has many cases of amputated fin- gers each year and has much to learn from the Chinese in this field. Dr. Gingras described as "very impressive' the Chinese methods of treating patients with burns. "Their extraor- dinary success rates' are due to "the aggressive manner in which they attack such cases.' Chinese doctors have saved patients who had burns on 99 per cent of the body and up to 90 per cent of the body with third-degree burns (the most se- he said. Canadian doc- tors accept a death rate of about 50 per cent for patients who have 50 per cent of the body covered with third-degree burns. That rate "is not acceptable' in China, he said. Use of proce- dure in which needles are in- serted into specific points on the body either to relieve pain or treat certain have a definite place in Canada in the future, Dr. Gingras said. This is especially true of acu- puncture used to relieve pain during operations, for example in place of anesthetics. EXTRA VALUES for this Here's help in getting ready for the long week end ahead.
