Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 11, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta FADE 3 John Vernon back in Canada for lead role in Callaghan story TORONTO (CP) Cana- dian actor John Vaxnon, who now lives in Hollywood, has been back here working for the CBC again after a six- year absence, bringing with him thoughts on how Canadian actors might make more money. He'd like to see the CBC try to break into the United States theatre market with 35-millimetre films for movie houses. Vernon, who rose to star- dom with the Wojcck series about a crusading coroner, came back to Toronto to play the lead role in a new televi- sion adaptation of Morley Cal- laghan's More Joy in Heaven, which he says "should be one of the biggest things the CBC has done for years." "It should be made into a two-hour show and used as a springboard for other produc- VcTnon said in an in- terview while waiting for a scene to be set up. "I hope they'll go into 35mm film and the CBC will try to sell some of its stuff to the U.S. It's alright to sell productions on 16mm for a nickel and a dime to England, Japan, and all that. But why don't we sell to a bigger mar- ket? "There'll b2 more for all of prestige, more room for development, better qual- ity film, better quality for the whole lot. "That's what I'm hoping for out of More Joy in Heaven, a damn good film on 1'oimn so people will want more." COSTS Production costs of More Joy in Heaven probably arc about It would cost half as much again to have shot the production in 35mm for movie house use, though 16mm film is standard fare for television networks. "Then the money we get from it will be turned into an- other production." Vernon spoke as the impa- tient Canadian actor who wants to do earn Canada, whatever the impediments may be. The CBC isn't in the business of producing films for the thea- tre circuit; its business is radio and television, in two languages. But, said Vernon: "It's time they were in busi- ness. They could still be doing everything t h e y 'v e always done so well for us Canadians, and they could be making more money to give us more as a Canadian audience, and pay us more as actors. "Let us have a few busi- nessmen up there at head- quarters. We could use the same guys, but tot's use an- other facet of them." Vemon, who has been doing theatre and television films in Hollywood, said that after shooting More Joy in Heaven he was going back to Califor- nia, to take tennis lessons. "Tennis at 40?
