Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 9, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, May 9, 1970 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 11 Contract Worries Calgary Drillers CALGAIIY (CP) Canadian drilling contractors are dis- tressed that an oil consoilium 45-pcr-cent owned by the federal government has awarded a con- tract for. work in the Canadian Arctic to an American drilline firm. Calgary contractors, who de- clined to be quoted by name, said they believe the consor- tium, Paiiai'clic Oils Ltd., should have awarded the con- tract to a Canadian company. The danger, say companies here, is that American [inns given early drilling contracls will establish a stranglehold on future work by the time oil ex- ploration activities in the North- west and Yiilioii reach full-scale proportions. Calgary firms say American competition appears to be trying to establish a command- ing position in northern Cana- dian oil drilling activity by sub- mitting profit-cutting low bids on early drilling contracts. The American firms thus establish their equipment in the North and can continue to bid low on future contracls because they won't have to pay transporta- tion costs. The contact which immedi- ately distresses the Canadian firms was awarded by Panarc- tic to ADEC Engineering and Drilling of Calgary, an affiliate of Parker Drilling Co. of Tulsa, Oida., for drilling on Ellcsmeve Island next winter. WAS LOWEST HID John A. MacDonald, deputy minister in the federal depart mcnt of public works and a Panarctic board member, saic Parker Drilling's bid on the con- tract was the lowest submitted by a wide margin and the award was made "in the lighl of this consideration." The contract is reported to be for three years and worth aboul Industry sources say that spe- Our Salesmen Earned in April an Average of Our Best Man Made and Was Paid tell us the automobile business is bad NOT SO AT ENERSON'S Our Sales In April Were Up 17% So If you are an experienced Salesman and want to make good money with a car supplied Phone me for an appointment BIT THE WAY, WE SELL BIKES, TOO, FOR ONLY FRED WEATHERUP af ENERSON'S of course Phone 327-5705 ACADIAN TEMPEST PONTIAC SKYLARK BUICK VAUXHALL and GMC TRUCKS daily-designed oil rigs for Arc- tic drilling cost about Transportation costs to the North can run as high as a rig. Canadian drilling firms have northern equipment on hand but say they cannot get work at present. Parker Drilling says it will have to design and build a special rig to carry out its Pan- arctic contract. Panarctic Oils is 45-per-cent owned by the federal govern- ment and 55-pcr-ccnt owned by a number of participating oil producing companies, most of which are American, The con- sortium was established espe- cially to explore for oil in the Canadian Arctic. Grant For Nurses OTTAWA (CP) The lederal health department has awarded a grant to the Canadian Nurses' Association for a re- search project, the association announced Thursday. The study is to look into obstacles faced by registered nurses in leader- ship positions in obtaining the necessary educational prepara- tions for their work. Famed Rancher Sells Spread QUESNAL, B.C. (CP) -Tire Home Ranch, owned and oper- ated by Floyd (Pan) Phillips, a living legend in the ranching world, has been sold to a UlaJi rancher.
