52 THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD May 1974 RCMP to unleash the Snoopy of Mountie set OTTAWA Meet the adventurous the Snoopy of the RCMP set. Sam is an intelligent a thinking a lousy poet on kicks over the traces and forgets himself. He's the RCMP's answer to Smokey the Bear and winner of a competition with Charlie the Horse. The national police force hopes pictures of a slightly bloodhoundish looking mutt dressed in a RCMP will appear across the country on a continuing basis. He'll make his first appearance next week during National Police Week in Canada. Sam the creation of headquarters people to bolster a spas- modically successful community-relations program. is my name safety and prevention is my posters and pamphlets will say. In 'Je m'appelle Sam et je vous incite a la securite et a prevention.'' The posters initially will promote the necessity of safety are when properly is fun when properly a life jacket is a but it keeps your head above the Eventually Sam will go into the drug scene. No examples of the slogans involved were available. Sam won out over Charlie the Horse. The sponsors of the program thought a horse would be more emblematic of the RCMP but others thought a dog would be better. Charlie may make his appearance with Sam sometime in the however. The idea is for police to have material on hand to take to the schools. Those involved in community relations feel rapport built up in the schools will reflect in better over-all community relations. The force has had a community relations program for years but there has been little national co-ordination Officials say lack of understanding of the judicial even among university is surprising. As a result police get the blame for matters for which they have no responsibility. Last year there were community relations workshops across the country and one recurring request was for something more than a picture of an RCMP constable on a horse or a snowmobile to show children Sam is patterned after a slightly disobedient dog named Sam who flubbed his act in the touring RCMP centennial show last year. The children loved him Meet Sam Cartoon canine to bolster RCMP relations 18 killed in bloody tribe feud JOHANNESBURG At least 18 persons have died in what South African police believe is a bloody revival of an ancient feud between two factions of Zulu tribesmen Detectives investigating the latest gangland- style killing of a tribesman in Johannesburg's white Hillbrow suburb Monday they believe the fighting is an extension of a feud between Zulu factions hundreds of miles away in the Kwa Zulu homeland in Natal. Most of the deaths have been in black but Monday night four unidentified blacks stopped two Zulus walking down a Hillbrow chased them into the basement of a nearby block of flats and shot one of them through the head and heart. Medical gas lines action taken EDMONTON The dental and medical professions are going to take action to prevent the recurrence of a March 19 accident in which a city girl died after a mixup of medical gas lines in a dentist's it was announced Tuesday. A joint meeting of the executive committees of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Alberta Dental Association approved establishing a committee to two doctors and a dentist. The committee will make an annual review of all non- hospital anesthetic facilities and machines Dr. L. H. the college's said in a joint statement following the that the committee proposal was one of seven approved unanimously at the meeting which was prompted by the girl's death. He said that effective July 1 all affected physicians and dentists will have to seek annual approval of their gas facilities from either the college or the dental association. Failure to obtain such approval could result in the college or association advising the government to halt medical care payments for anesthetic services in the practitioner's office in addition to a charge of unprofessional conduct being laid in cases where equipment that had not been approved was used. NEW STANDARDS Dr. Le Riche said interim approval will be provided for all existing facilities but all will have to meet new standards by Sept. 1. These new regulations should be provided by the Alberta Society of Anesthetists and approved by the doctor's and dentists the joint committee recommended. Both governing bodies also agreed to recommend that the federal government set standards which would apply across Canada. The college already has standards for the operation and maintenance of medical gas hookups in non-hospital facilities which perform minor surgery on an out- patient basis. Dr. Le Riche dentists need different regulations. He said there currently are such surgical centres at Red Deer and Calgary and the college hopes more will be established throughout the province.
