M9 Dief gets police aid OTTAWA (CP) "You don't let a man like this sit by the road at that time of an Ontario Provincial Police constable said Thurs- day, referring to John Die- fenbaker. The former prime minister was returning to Ottawa early Wednesday morning after watching a hockey playoff in Montreal. The car in which Diefenba- ker, 77, and three others were riding in ran out of gas east of Ottawa about 2 a.m. Constable Russ Lakcey said he found an off-duty police- man and one of the Diefenba- ker party trying to rouse a gas station owner. He drove to the car and of- fered Mr. Diefenbaker, the member of Parliament for Prince Albert, a ride home. He said he doesn't give all stranded motorists rides to the city, but "you don't let a man like this sit by the road at that time of night." "Never having met the man before, I was amazed that he could easily carry on a con- versation with me about or- dinary, everyday events. "We talked about police work, hockey, guns all kinds of things." Toronto Star records profit TORONTO (CP) -Toronto Star Ltd. reports net profit for the six months ended March 31 of S3.531.000 or 48 cents a share, up from or 24 cents in the corresponding period a year ago. Operating revenue rose 25 per cent to fr o m Beland H. Honderich, presi- dent and publisher, said year- ago earnings were reduced by non-recurring expenses involved in expanding production and distribution after The Telegram had ceased publication in 1971. The outlook for the balance of the current fiscal year is favor- able, he said, but net profit in the second half will not likely match first-half results, mainly because of delivery cost in- creases in July. Landing rights for airport BUTTE. Mont. (AP) The Butte Airport has been desig- nated for international landing rights in conjunction with the city's inland containerized freight terminal. Rod Hanson, a U.S. customs official, said yesterday the des- ignation msans that the cus- toms officers can grant land- ing rights at the airport for planes on international flights. The difference between a "landing rights" airport and and an international airport, he said, is that the landing rights stop requires prior no- tice to be given before a plane lands.
