Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 2, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Lamb M.D. Dear Dr. about two years now I haven't been able to open my mouth normally either to eat yawn. If I do I am in pain. I've been to three oral surgeons who prescribed braces and either gave me muscle relaxers or tranquilizers. I also had special X-rays of the mandible joints. The conclusion was I have a muscle spasm. Have you ever heard of a similar Can I be Dear 1 have. The muscles in the jaw are often contracted. I first learned about this problem from Dr. Janet who was then President Kennedy's physician. She taught me that one should be able to open the mouth wide enough to place the knuckles of the first three fingers between the teeth. If this is not the jaw muscles are too tight. Her which a physician should involved spraying the skin surface over the jaw muscles with a coolant it makes a difference which spray is opening the jaw as wide as possible. The procedure was repeated again taking full advantage of opening the jaw as wide as possible. In a few the jaw muscle would and Fun with figures By J. A. H. Sometimes more than one such treatment was but with care to repeatedly open the mouth as much as possible within a few days it was usually possible to open the mouth wide enough to place the three knuckles between the teeth. If you wanted to try this you could rub the area over the jaw muscles with a cube of ice on both sides of the face then try opening as wide as possible. The whole object is to lengthen the jaw and this will relieve the muscle spasm. The procedure is worth a try. You haven't anything to lose. If you can't do it yourself you might want to see a specialist in physical medicine. They usually know a lot about muscles. Most people who have spasm of the jaw muscles have other problems that contribute to the difficulty. This may be a problem in posture that needs correction. Would you believe that a short leg can cause you to hold your head in an unusual position that in lead to neck problems and other muscle Dear Dr. am 62 years old and have recently found that my teeth are becoming discolored and turning yellow. I brush my teeth at least three times daily with a good but it does not seem to help the problem. Would this be a vitamin if what is your suggestion to remedy the Dear teeth undergo chemical changes as we get older. This causes teeth to naturally show a more yellow timt. This is within the tooth itself and can't be removed by any amount of brushing. It is true that an outside coating of yellow material can accumulate and be hard to remove. I would suggest you see your dentist to have a good which you could probably use and if they are still yellow afterward you will just regard it the same way we regard changes in hair color. Everything is new and lightly perfumed with spring flowers. But let's remember that there is another side to old Mother Nature. Her wondrous world also is beset by a selection of sneaky booby just waiting to do us in. In the world of and everywhere it's always a good idea to watch out for the worst. Knowing about hidden perils should not detract from our enjoyment. Far from it. For last summer a number of people were trapped by quicksands and soupy swamps and soggy bogs. Many of these incidents happened because the people did not understand these sneaky hazards. before we set forth to explore the summery let's prepare ourselves to outsmart the possible mishaps. For let's learn to identify the poisonous snakes likely to be lurking in our neighborhoods and promise ourselves to not in the opposite direction. Let's practice swimming in case we fall in. Let's chart our trips on a detailed map in case we get lost. Let's renounce cave exploring unless accompanied by a qualified spelunker. And let's watch out for swamps and other soggy booby traps. Strictly quicksands occur on ocean beaches and along the brinks of lakes and rivers. They are pockets of sand or fine silt mixed with water. Bogs and swampy quagmires are mixtures of water and thick soupy mud. They form in flood lands and in the basins of partly dried up lakes. In all the the soggy mixture is too thin to walk upon and too thick for though a person is sure to float on quicksand and so won't drown in it unless he panics. These soupy pockets form where hollows in the underlying bedrock form solid basins. The solid rocky basins capture and hold water from from lakes or from the sea. Sooner or the water becomes mixed with sand or mud or decaying vegetation. If you step into you sink down. And the solid floor of the basin may be a few feet or perhaps 30 feet below the surface. Usually these booby traps are disguised to fool the eye. A quicksand on an ocean beach may look like a safe stretch of sand. A quicksand by a lake or river may look like a safe stretch of silty mud. Often the surface of a boggy swamp is overgrown with a surface layer of healthy looking weeds. Our best defense is to learn all we can about where these pitfalls are before we venture into unexplored territory. Rangers in the area have this information. Some spots are marked on maps and many others have posted warning signs. Questions asked by children of Herald readers should be mailed to Ask P.O. Box Huntlngton California 92648.
