His thesis is that a Jew can be just as imposing. as urgently demanding, just as, tough and offensive as anybody else. Now it appears Kahane has succeeded too welt. He has not only shown people he is no Casper Milquetoast, he has con- vinced some that he may more resemble Adolf Hitler. Kahane is the founder of the right-wing, mainly unlit ant Jewish Defense League. As an American citizen in 1968. lie established the JDL as a new Jewish rallying point. He ga- thered several years of head- lines, and numerous arrest warrants, by leading his mostly young followers into direct sauits on real or imagined anti- semitism. He organized vigilante pa- trols to "protect" Jews in trou- blesome New York neighbor- hoods. He harassed Soviet re- presentatives in the United States because of restrictive So- viet policies towards .lews. In one long running debate, he was accused by U.S. authori- ties of sponsoring a guerrilla camp for the training of JDL revolutionaries. Mow a resident of Israel, try- ing, as in America to lead the Jews out of the "wilderness of apathy." he is again up to his yarmulka in trouble. In 17 months of residence here, he has been arrested twice, pected of dozens of other ille- galities, criticized as a koak a' the highest level of government worse, likened to Hitler. The Hitler charae emoted when Kahane sent out hundreds of mimeographed letters which invited Arabs living in and around Jeiusalem to sell their property and get out of the country. The Israeli govern- ment, trying desperately to minimize tension between Arabs and Jews in Jerusalem, was stunned and humiliated. "Who in hell does this man think he is'.'" Yelped one "ine turtics are Hitler's." That allegation had hardly stopped ringing in the nation's ears when Kahane struck again. Allegedly, anyway. Stung by- reports that Christian mission- aries in Israel have, in recent years, converted some 5.000 to Jews to Jesus, ths JDL bellowed loudly that "all mis- sionaries should be driven from Israel." A short while later, coinci- bombs were placed on several missionary door- step's, fires were started on missionary property, and sev- eral Christian workers receiv- ed telephone threats. The anti-JDL protestation., as a result, now rage in almost ail important Israeli camps. says 3 government spokesman, "has insulted and frightened the Arabs, the Chris- tians and the moderate Jews. Who's next? A lot of us think the man is crazy. It's obvious he wants Israel made up of only pure Kahane type Jews." For his part. Meir Kahane dismisses the talk of Hitler. Sitting in a newly acquired of- fice, a bleak third-floor, one- time apartment Jerusalem's Jaffa Street, Kahane says, with a small speech impediment, that he has nothing personal against either Arabs or Chris- tians, that all he's doing is try- ing to forestall trouble: "Take the Arabs. In the first place. I did not tell them, as the papers said, to get out of Israel or else. I simply advised them that they had that op- tion. Why? Because, let's face it. Arabs and Jews are just not going to go on living side by side, nice and easy, through- out history." In a few years, Kahane be- lieves, Arabs are going to be- come weary of Israel rule and reb3l. that happens, we'll be in the middle of a civil war. I hope to prevent that. I think the Israeli government should work out ways to help the Arabs leave the country. My organization (JDL) is trying to work up plans right now. It's the only way to avoid a future catastrophe." As for the Christian mission- aries, Kahane says he thinks they, like the Arabs, are poten- tial trouble. He insists he isn't against Christians "I think Israel should have com- plete freedom of religion" but he's down on missionaries of any religon. "Jews don't try to convert people, why should He fears the "soul snatchers" if left uninhibited "could destroy the Jewish value system." The Jewish value system, to be sure, is foremost on Ka- hane's list for vigilante protec- tion. He denies with a shrug any notion of a pure Jewish state, but at the same time in- sists "Israel is for Why- did Israel come into existence? he asks rhetorically: "Not just so the world could have another state. If there's anything the world didn't need ii was just another state. Is- rael was created for the Jews not for Arabs or Christian missionaries, hut. for Jews. That is the singular importance of Thus convinced, Kahane the rationale behind Israel for Jaw's is one of survival. "1 don't believe in the long run Jews have a permanent fu- ture anywhere but in Israel. Given a crisis anywhere in world, the Jew will always the scapegoat. Even in Ameri- ca and God knows I America even in America. "I'm worried, for example, about the dollar crisis in United States. I think it will manifest itself into a crisis for Jews. I think Jews will be scapegoats for any economic decline. My ad- vice to American Jews, and any other Jews, is to get on a plane and come to Israel quick- ly." Kabane's advice, as well as his beliefs, are not widely re- ceived in his new homeland. His JDL group is at best only 1.200 strong 'Kahane's figure) and comprised mostly of young American immigrants or visi- tors who are obedient but broke. JDL here is down at the heels. Says Kahane: "Peo- ple are always with me al! the way, until I ask for money." Kahane supports his family solely on writings Che contri- butes to a U.S. There is not enough extra to support much more than a small JDL movement. Still, the slight, shorthaired Kahane is cutting is niche in Israel. His "Never Again" ap- proach to Jewish identity (in reference to World War II con- centration camps 1 appeals to many immigrants who spent their former lives in. at the very least, "concentration camps of fear and worry."
