Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 1, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta May 1974 THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD-11 Slayings prompt Cuban intrigue MIAMI An increasing number of Miami Cubans are walking around with guns stuck in their belts. Some of them carry automatic weapons in their cars. They do not feel safe in their on their way to even at home. The fear results from the murders of two prominent anti-Castro Cuban exiles in recent weeks and the issuing of death threats by a refugee group called state and local police officials fear a breakout of armed warfare among Cuban exiles here and in the New York City area. could touch it said one official. Authorities believe inter- necine struggles among the refugees were responsible for the murder in a Miami suburb of Jose Elias de la on Good Friday night and that of Arturo Rodriguez in New York a few days later. Both killers escaped and no arrests have been made. But many refugees blame the slay and the present tense on from outside the United States. They say the whole thing is a plot instigated by Premier Fidel Castro to foment civil war' among Cubans in exile. While Miami police puzzled over the Torriente a newly emerged refugee organ- ization called claimed it ordered his murder because he had the cause of Cuban it was forsaking a grand design to invade Communist- ruled Cuba. Death threats have since been received by at least six other widely known including former Cuban president Carlos Prio. The FBI says it considers the threats very serious SUSPECT CONNECTION No one has claimed responsibility for Rodriguez's but some exiles and Havana radio said they thought they saw a connection between the two killings because Rodriguez had been a bitter Torriente critic. In the midst of all other exiles are busy on a renewed campaign of worldwide terrorism and bombings directed against Cuban government property and personnel. Explosions have rocked Cuban offices in Spain and Chile in recent months. A special justice department team has been sent to Miami to investigate this so-called nationalization of the against and a federal grand jury has been taking testimony from exiles and others. Representatives Claude Pepper and Dante Fascell of Florida have called for a fed- eral investigation of the Miami and New York slayings and urged the FBI to provide protection for the threatened. The outbreak in hostilities is taking place at a time when Cuba is closer than ever to being welcomed back into the family of American countries. Exiles think they can prevent or delay this by alerting public opinion to their cause through violence. BLAME SMALL GROUP Many refugees believe that a small minority is damaging their image with their Ameri- can neighbors. Just when it appeared that exile intrigues among the half million Cubans in the U.S. were being forgot- a new outbreak of violence puts them back in the headlines.
