The program portrays the life of the flying barnstormers, young men with fragile little crafts, who put on shows over a field outside of town and drew crowds who often and witnessed a crash. It also shows how the coming of World War I and the U.S. involvement in it encouraged the develop- ment of aviation and brought fame to such men as Eddie Rickenbacker, who downed 26 German planes. Robbie Robertson, who won the special effects Oscar for his work on "Marooned" said that when they shot some scenes at NASA, thoy were troubled -by sound feedback. The crew's sound expert went to work and fixed it in three hours. It was something, NASA s-oid, that its own experts had been trying to remedy for five years. The winning short subject documentary, "Czechoslovakia was smuggled out of Czechoslovakia in the gas tank of a motorcycle.
