J. Car- son, public service commission chairman, will be the first wit- ness at the Commons public ac- counts committee inquiry into the controversy surrounding the auditor-general, Alfred D. Haies committee chairman, said Thursday. Mr. Hales told the committee Mr. Carson asked to appear with a brief on the right of the auditor-general to appoint his employees. Committee hearings on the auditor-general are to start next Tuesday. The public service commis- sion hires members of the audi- tor-general's staff as it does all federal public servants. Auditor-General Maxwell Hen- derson has suggested to the gov- ernment that he have the right to hire his own staff members. Mich.) and seven ether cadcrs of a peace mass in the Pentagon have been fined each by a federal magistrate, Foman Averts Possible Tragedy RED DEER (CP) A 70- year-old woman averted pos- sible tragedy when she extin- guished a blaze in a two sto- rey apartment building. A fire department spokesman said it was the seventh arson attempt during the last 10 days. Cer.tral School was destroyed Monday in what spokesman said was arson and another school and the YMCA building were scenes of arson attempts last weekend. The department spokesman said Disa Sveinson used water to douse a blaze she discovered in a bathroom in the apartment building. The bathroom was used by tlie occupants of two apartments. The fire department said there was a smell of kerosene and bundled paper had been ignited and placed under a scatter rug in the roon.. Police have assigned extra night patrols on city buildings and schools now are leaving lights burning during hours of darkness. ;
