Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - May 1, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Ig _ THE LETHMIDGI HKAID Friday, Moy 1, Plan Your Garden Early Create Outdoor Livability By Sheila and Allan Swcnson "NBA Garden Specialists Whether you have only small garden space or the sweeping expanse of a suburban home, you can create real livability with good landscaping. Plan early! Consider activi- ties most rewarding to you and your family. If the area is Closets Can Be Colorful Through the ingenious use of a few decorating materials, closets can provide an attrac- tive and well organized area for storage, says the Canadian Paint Manufacturers Associa- tion. First attach a piece of hardboard pegboard to the back of your closet. Then paint the hardboard and closet in- terior with a flat or semi-gloss enamel. When the paint is dry, attach hooks in the pegboard and hang household items clothing, cleaning mat e r i a 1 s, cooking utensils, keys! A peek into your attractive new closet will be enough to brighten your dav. large, section it off into a play or recreation area for children or adults. Plan a relaxing or entertaining area, too. In a small yard, use every inch of available space to create sin- gle activity area that can dou- ble as space for garden cook- outs or cocktail parties and the scene of evening relaxation. First consideration in land- scaping is privacy. In a large yard, trees and high shrubs or hedges are most desirable. You may want an attractive fence as backdrop. Climbing roses, morning glories or sweet peas will add color to a wall or fence. Flowering shrubs, such as rhododendron or forsythia, provide an excellent transition between the height of a fence and the ground. To partition areas effectively, use small trees or shrubs to create irregular, flowing lines; they're more interesting than straight. Flower beds should be planned the same way. Use bright colored flowers as fo- cal points in various spots. Let rows bend and weave with landscaping lines. To get maximum use from a tiny garden, consider a brick or stone patio. You can plant small shrubs, rose bushes and flowers in beds around tire edges of the patio. Leave the major part of the space free for parties, barbecues, sunbath- ing, lounging. Every hour and dollar invest- ed in developing your outdoor living area will produce thous- ands of hours of pleasure for you, for your family and friends. (Newspaper Enterprise Assn.) Thers are two basic ways lo fertilize a lawn. The standard heavy-weight, short-term method, or long-term Lawn Green method. Lawn Green contains a balanced formula with special UF nitrogen that releases slowly into your grass. That way it keeps on feeding your lawn for weeks after initial application. You get a greener, better nourished lawn. And you get to spend more sunny afternoons with a caddy cart than your fertilizer spreader. Another thing to remember is that 22 Ibs. of concentrated Lawn Green equals 40-80 Ibs. of conventional fertilizer. And one 22 Ib. bag of Lawn Green covers a full 5000 square feet. So Lawn Green makes light work of things. It's your summer. Enjoy it. PRODUCTS Division ol CIBA Company Llmiletf Quebec, LAWN AND PLANT CARE Weed-Free Shrubs, Ornamentals, Flower and Koek Gardens One of the surest ways to prevent a weed from growing is to lick ifc before it starts. At the seed stage. This can be accomplished by using Gran- ular Weed Preventer, contain- ing Trifluralin. Trifluralin prevents seeds from germinating. As a result, desirable plants can not be started from seed in Triflura- Hn-treated soil. But neither can weeds. The trick is to time things so only the weeds are eliminated. For Established Perennials, Shrubs and Ornamentals Since these are not starting from seed, no problem. Just clean out existing weeds in the spring and treat, with Granu- lar Weed Preventer contain- ing Trifluralin. For Flower Beds After transplanting annuals, wait weeks until they be- come well established. Hoe to remove any weeds, then treat with Granular Weed Pre- venter containing Trifluralia, Fruit Trees Apples, cherries, peaches, pears and plums can be very successfully grown by the home owner. But the first se- cret of success is regular spray- ing. The second aecreb is, keep things simple. There's no need for you to worry about a dozen different sprays. Green Cross Fruit Tree Spray is a balanced formula that will control most common insect pests and dis- eases.
