Gotft goes to bat for radio station EDMONTON (CP) The Alberta government is pressing :he Canadian Radio-Television Commission for permission to continue the life of a radio station funded imlirect- y by tlie provincial govern- ment. Don Getty, minister of fed- eral and intergovernmental af- fairs, told the legislature a two- year extension of CKUA's broadcasting licence has al- ready been arranged. The federal government has expressed some opposition to the continuance of CKUA's li- cence because it says provincial governments should not be in the radio station business. CKUA operated with funds from Alberta Government Tele- phones and has offices and a transmitter in Edmonton. Mr. Getty told Robert Clark there has been "considerable agitation among ail Albertans who were concerned that the station might go oft the air." .there Is now an effort being made to place CKUA un- der the kind of jurisdiction that will allow it to continue indefin- itely." The station's character would not be changed because of any change in jurisdiction. Mr. Getty said in response to another question from Mr. Clark there will be no "politi- cal interference" in the station.
