The winners will advance to County of Forty Mile finals to be held at Burdott Commun- ity Hall April 7 at 7 p.m. Miss Cowie defeated 11 com- petitors in the senior section with her prepared speech en- titlled Exploring Canada, and an impromptu address on mod- cm music. Jean Stappler fin- ished second and Debbie Cowie third. Tiie junior section of the com- petition for those 13 years and umier was won by Richard Mac- kenzie with a prepared speech on .Smoking and an impromptu on the advantage of Miss Jensen defeated Donna Brittner and noxanne Comvay in the Horse Club's contest. Thirteen took part in the speak off. She discussed Why You are You, and followed up with an impromptu speech on personal- ity, heredity versus environ- ment. The junior section of the con- test was won by Laurie Cole speaking on Morgan Horses and Books. Randy Wesley placed second and Andy Jensen third. Short highway There's to be another marked shortening of tlie highway dis- tance between the Pacific Coast and the southern prair- ies. Construction of the 16 mile Kinnaird to Salmo link, border- ing along the eastern end of the trans provincial highway, has been approved by the B.C. treasury board.
