Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 27, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, March LETHMIDGE HERALD-9 Members given 12 years From REUTER-AP BELFAST (CP) Five members of the outlawed Irish Republican Army were given 12-year prison sen- tences Monday in connection with the attempted murder of a British army patrol and a bomb blast which left eight families homeless. David Murray and Peter McGinn, each 19, were jailed for attempting to murder the five-man patrol on an ex- pressway on the outskirs of Belfast. In another trial, Kathleen McGuinness, 23, John Donnelly, 23, and Francis Short, 19, were sentenced after the court heard they crashed their car, containing a primed bomb, into a row of houses. Pollution threatens timberlands WARSAW (AP) Industrial pollution is threatening to destroy Poland's timberlands. has reached catastrophic said Dr. Jerzy Maluja, a forestry -ministry official. "Whole forests are dying." Silesia, Poland's industrial heartland, is one of the most seriously affected areas. Sulphur and nitrogen fallout from the smoke of coal- operated power plants is robbing the soil of its natural properties. Thousands of acres of vegetation have simply dried up. Although other European countries have similar pollution problems, they are more serious in Poland, Warsaw scientists said. "It's worse in our country because Poland's" power production is based almost entirely on coal, said Maluja. Before the Second World War Poland was mainly agricultural instead of industrial. "Now it's the other way round. What we are witnessing is the climax of years of steady poisoning." Board rules airline fares are unjust WASHINGTON (AP) The Civil Aeronautics Board has railed that many of the air fares charged by United States airlines are unjust. It ordered the carriers to raise their coach fares on shorthaul trips and to decrease toe price of long- distance journeys The board also said the airlines must increase their first-class fares over a two- year period beginning in July. The orders are effective in three months unless appealed by the airlines. The board ruled that the fare per mile charged by the airlines did not decrease sufficiently as the distance travelled increased, even though the cost to the airline dropped. This resulted, the board said, in fares running below the cost in short-haul markets but above costs in the long- haul markets. Record sales WINDSOR, Onl.
