Starting then, taxes on corporation profits had to be paid at an earlier date. Reverting to the former schedule would leave more money temporarily in the hands of corporations, and it could be used for expansion. SPRING BUDGET PLANNED The brief was the chamber's usual pre-budget submission to Finance Minister Edgar Benson. Mr. Benson plans a budget this spring, but has not yet decided on the date, or whether it will be coupled with the government's proposed sweeping revision of the Income Tax Act with the U.S. dollar. The dollar was pegged at 92.5 cents in U.S. funds until last June. But the chamber said it would not oppose letting the dollar float on international exchange markets until 1972 if that is necessary to avoid pegging it at too high a rate. GORDON ARCHIBALD The chamber also recommended reduction of the 11-percent sales tax on building materials at a scheduled rate, grants to private industry for on-site job training for the unemployed, and further tax relief for investment in anti-pollution measures. The government should emphasize in its next budget the country's need for foreign investment, the brief added. It said the chamber is dismayed by the view of some private and public officials that Canada should buy back or even take back foreign-owned interests in Canada. The government should also work towards repegging the Canadian dollar somewhere below its present level of near parity iVeti? York stocks Supplied by Richardson. LETHBRIDGE Contact Suite 14, Lafferty Bldg. or Phone 327-5301 Government optimistic about ore EDMONTON (CP) - The government is optimistic that a large deposit of low-grade iron ore in the Clear Hills area of northern Alberta will eventually be developed, Russ Patrick, minister of mines and minerals, said in the legislature. Replying to Don Getty (PC- StratJicona West), Mr. Patrick said a process to upgrade the ore has been developed by the Alberta Research Council but the company involved in the project has run into financial difficulty and now is in receivership. "But I am optimistic that funds will be forthcoming in a few months for the company to proceed," he said. The primary problem was finding markets for the high-quality steel that could be manufactured from the ore deposits, located north of Wors-ley 300 miles northwest of Edmonton. The financial and technical difficulties are not insurmountable, Mr. Patrick said, and the company should soon be in a position to resume the search for markets which will lead to construction of a smelter in Alberta. He said that eventually a large-scale plant, with an investment of about $100 million, will be built but "it won't be for a few years."
