Business esent iSpeoial to the 1-Iersid) Edmonton, Mar. 26.-The government ha? under contemplation the questiou o; taking over the trust company business in Alberta as a govern-1 Tiient organization was the announce-1 menr Hon. C. R. Mitchell made j Tuesday morning at the consideration . by the private bills committee of the ! rot to incorporate the United Farm-j ers of. Alberta. | The organization is seeking powers | to act as executor and administrator snd it was while this section was be-j :ng discussed that the minister gave j the intimation of the intentions of; the government. I The measure with some slight > cV.anges in form was ordered reported for third reading. The provincial treasurer said that j the government^ had been thinking i over the trust company situation for | some time but had not been able to | prepare legislation for the present session. [ It was intended to investigate the trust companies doing business in the province. Jhe work they were doing, its extent and .whether or not the work! was being done satisfactorily. He would not. however, promise ! that a bill would be brought in. but the investigation would be made with a view to enabling the government to determine its policy in regard to these , concerns. j More Stringent | Eut whether the government goes into the trust business or not." said Mr. Mitchell, "the act will be made very much more stringent than at present. Legislation was being sought this session with reference to obtaining additional returns, and the right of inspection. A long discussion as to the assets the V. F. A. would put up as surety in connection with the new position of executor or administrator. H. W. Wood, president of the organization, said that what they were asking was simply an enabling act to give the 1'. F. A. power to do this under certain conditions. When they ktsew they had the authority there were a good many .ways to raise funds for security. They would get some permanent way of keeping up personal security. They were putting on a campaign for life membership. They believed they would be able to get IS.MOO life members and that money would be invested permanently. They had thought of what the object o:' the organization was to get a human sympathetic touch between the heriefieiuries and the administrator, and ihey did not want to stand in the relation of a financial corporation to the people. ! After Mr. Woods' explanation the ' section agreed giving the V. F. A. power "To accept, and execute the offices and duties of executors arid ; administrators with and subject to all such rights' and powers and liabilities us are provided by the trust com- . panics ordinance.
