Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 25, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta If -*HI UTHIMDOI HfRAtD - Thundery. March 2S, 1971 EXPRESSIONS - Lieut. William Calley, of Miamf, Flo., ihowt a variety of expres* sions as he talked with friends in his Fort Benning, Ga., quarters where he is waiting for a verdict from a court-martial panel deliberating his case. He is accused of killing 102 Vietnamese men, women, and children at My Lai three years ago. sugg OTTAWA (CP) -' The government has advised provincial health authorities to take special precautions against infections due to intravenous injections after, a recent outbreak of them in the United States. In a special release, the health department said no cases of such infections have been found in Canada although t h e r e have been nine deaths and several hundred serious in the U.S. But the release added that some infusion substances produced by a U.S. laboratory under suspicion as the source of the infections have been shipped to Canada and special precautions are necessary. The department said it had notified provincial health departments that the blood infections -- called septicemia - in the V.S. were "associated with intravenous infusion products produced by Abbott Laboratories Ltd." there. It quoted Health Minister John Munro as saying that "no cases of infusion-related septicemia have been observed in Canada." "We have no evidence that in- travenous products produced by Abbott Laboratories Ltd. in Canada are unsafe." But the federal food and drug directorate had started an intensive analysis and inspection program to ensure the safety of Canadian supplies. The Abbott company was co-operating fully. The department said the U.S. infections, which have sprung up during the last six months, "have been associated with intravenous infusion products produced hi the Rocky Mount, N.C., plant" of Abbott. No Rocky Mount products" had been imported to Canada. "The products of the North Chicago, 111., plant of Abbott Laboratories Ltd. are also under investigation in the United States," the release said. About five per cent of all Abbott products s o 1 d in Canada were produced at the North Chicago plant. CARRY CODES "These products can be identified by the label which carries the words 'North Chicago' and the products which are under suspicion have codes beginning with the numbers 842 to 855 inclusive. "An exception to this labelling is the product LAID, Dex-tran 40, which carries a Montreal label but is in fact manufactured in North Chicago." Both the products imported from the North Chicago plant and those made in ' Montreal were under intensive investigation by federal officials. Mr. Munro said in no ease were the intravenous solutions themselves contaminated. The problem apparently originated with organisms found under the bottle caps.
