Mr. Diefenbaker recalls Regina as it was back in 1903, Saskatoon with its Ban-Colonists and describes how the train crews would stop along .the right of way to hunt for birds, prairie chickens and geese. He goes on to recall the family's arrival in Rostbern and their settling down in Duck Lake and Fort Carleton and relates stories of Indians whom he met, of Gabriel Du-mont and of pioneers who made the Canadian West. He makes reference to the hardships of homesteading, the hard Saskatchewan winters, to working, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and, in a more humorous vein, to his experimental flight using his mother's parasol. Churchill arrived twenty minutes late, at once announcing that the Germans were going to attack Russia on the very next day. Operation Barbarossa, Hitler's Soviet invasion, began at 4:00 a.m. on June 22, 1941 taking the Soviet forces entirely by surprise. But Hitler's treacherous attack had produced a result which he had certainly not intended - the first step toward what Churchill had called "The Grand Alliance." The final step was not far off. On December 7, 1941 came the second turning point of the war - Japan's attack of Pearl Harbor. The first reaction to this event was one of horror and defeat. But the long-term view was different. Churchill wrote later: "I could not foretell the course of events, I do not pretend to have measured accurately the martial might of Japan, but now at this very moment I know the United States was in the war, up to the neck and into the death. So we had won after all." The Grand Alliance was a reality. TRADE UP NOW!
