Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - March 23, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta PAGE S Star returns from European triumphs Brother, friend join Anne Fresh from the triumphs of both concert stage and television in Europe and the United States, Canada's own Anne Murray will star in a special one-hour show on CBC television Friday, March 30 at 9 p.m. Title of the show is Anne- Herself Among Others. The "others" are her 21-year-oid brother Bruce and fellow Mari-timer John Allan Cameron. In a day when many famous Canadian show business stars make their headquarters out of the country and surround themselves with musical arrangers, writers, television and recording producers, managers and agents from other countries, mostly from the United States, Anne Murray remains purely Canadian. She has great family loyalty and feels keenly that her roots are in Nova Scotia, where she was born and grew up. Brother Bruce Murray is a favorite of Anne's. She's proud of his scholastic achievements and especially the way he can accurately recall names, titles and plots from nearly all the movie and musical stage shows ever made. Bruce, a graduate of St Francis Xavier University, is presently studying for his master's degree in history at University of Victoria. When they finished -videotaping Anne's special in mid-March, Anne and Bruce took off for Springhill to attend the wedding of one of the Murray brothers. Bruce was then to head back to school in Victoria. Tuesday, March 27 6Anne-Herself Among Others9 Canada's claim to international singing fame, Anne Murray, the quiet girl from Springhill, N.5., is seen with fellow Maritimer John Allan Cameron, as they appear in an Anne Murray Special on CBC television Friday, March 30, at 9 p.m. Title of the one-hour music and song show is Anne - Herself Among Others. Anne's brother Bruce, 21, also appears in a segment of songs sung around the living room piano during family get-togethers years ago. Asner close to Lou Grant who brought him 2 Emmys By JERRY BUCK HOLLYWOOD (AP) - When Lou Grant fulfilled his dream to own a neighborhood bar he wanted his customers to be happy. So he went about it in the only way he knew how. Lou, played by Edward Asner on the CBS Mary Tyler Moore Show, organized a barroom sing-along in much the same way a top sergeant picks volunteers for kitchen police. You, you and you! Sing! The result was disastrous- but excruciatingly funny and an illustration of the way Asner has gone from one of film's most menacing heavies to television's funniest and mostj charming heavy. He has won two Emmys for his role of the irascible TV news director. "Lou Grant is closer to me than any character I've ever played," said Asner. "I strongly lose sight many times where 1 Lou Grant ends and I begin. "What Lou Grant has done primarily for me is that it has encouraged me and instructed me to search for the offbeat comic comments within other he3vy roles. I used to attack such roles with a grimness and savagery. Now I seek those moments to lighten my role." EXERCISES DAILY A one-time high school football tackle in Kansas City, Asner fights his beer-barrel shape with daily exercises and jogging near his Bel Air home. He is married to the former Nancy Sykes, whom he met while playing Peachum in The Three Penny Opera off Broadway. They have twins, Matthew and Lira, and another girl, Kathryn. After several years on the stage in Chicago and New York, vith television roles sandwiched in, Asner and his wife headed west by car and trailer in 1961. Along the way he filmed a Route 66 episode in Young-stown, Ohio, to pay expenses. He has been in heavy demand- pun intended-in Hollywood since then. "I'd succeeded in comedy before, but I didn't care to make a practice of it," he said. "Jay Sandrich, the director, put the definition on it. He said DID YOU KNOW? You can rent roto tillers, lawn combers, aerators, lawn rollers, post hole augers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, lawn edgers, wheelbcrrows, paint sprayers, camper jacks, c e m en t mixers, cement trowels, ladders, tents, cribs, rollawoys, appliance hand trucks, carpet shampooers, etc., etc., etc. at WARD'S SERVICES LTD. 1712 2nd Ave. S, 328-8775 Open 7-7 ex. Sun. and hoi. I was an actor who could make it work once I found the key to the character. I'm not a person who can press a button and be instant funny." Asner said he is happy with the series and grateful for what the Lou Grant role has done to his career, but he does grate under the industry practice of restricting outside appearances. "Every player is trapped once in a series," he said. "He can do three particular I shows in a 13-week cycle for another network or sponsor. So ! what you do are the biggies. I I've done my least outside work j for my home network. I wonder why?" He said, "I like what I'm doing very much. There is still room for probes and tests. I don't regret not having besn a leading man ... It would have to be a good series for me to want to be top banana. "A great portion of my life, and I suppose everyone's, is beset with fears of inadequacy and cowardice. And fighting against it. Overcoming it. Avoiding it. Shoring up against the eventual challenge that those two things migb:. hurl at you." 1:00 O Ed Allen O Another World: Q| General Hospital c Movie: Wee Geordie Secret Storm Let's Make A Deal One Life Mik?
