Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 22, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 18 THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD Friday, March 22, 1974 Pick A Bag! Cabrelli's fifteen super styles for Spring, at Eaton's Seal hunt tapers off HALIFAX (CP) The an- nual hunt for seals off Can- ada's east coast is under way but decreasing participation by landsmen, sealers who op- erate from land bases, and the virtual disappearance of big ships have reduced it to a token industry. The hunt officially began March 7 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off Labrador with the main activity by Ca- nadians confined to ice floes around the Magdalen Islands and off Newfoundland's north- east coast. For the first time in more than 100 years, no large New- foundland vessel was sent to the ice; last year only one made the trip to the Front, the name given to an area of the Labrador Sea where breeding seals drift by the coast on the spring ice. The day the hunt began, two vessels set out from Halifax. They will share, if their luck is good, the quota of animals set by the federal government. In 1973, five Ca- nadian ships managed to take only seals. A fleet of Norwegian ves- sels is expected on the Front but their numbers are not known. The Norwegians have agreed to take only seals. None of the big ships will hunt in the Gulf of St. Law- rence, where the quota is 000 seals. The Gulf is re- served for landsmen and hunters operating from ves- sels 65 feet in length or under. The hunters are after the young harp 10 days old or younger. These are prized for their soft white pelt and must be taken within 10 days of birth because the whiteness dulls each day afterwards until their dingy shade of grey is unwanted by furriers. Each are licensed to hunt from the Magdalen a nominal fee of for the right to continue a tradition and business that made a handful of men wealthy but provided a bare living to the actual hunters. Owners of small vessels pay for the right to send their small wooden craft into the leads or opening in the ice be- fore dropping the hunters, or swilers, on the bobbing pans. The larger ships cost their owners a fee based on a ton after exclusion from con- sideration of a portion of the ship's weight. Besides being under the constant watch of federal fish- eries officers whose job is to see that quotas are not ex- ceeded and that the seals are killed according to regu- lations, the hunters face con- stant criticism from con- servationists. Manager disputes charges EDMONTON (CP) A branch manager for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Thursday disputed charges made against the bank during an eight-week inquiry into the failure of Cosmopolitan Life Assurance Co. William Hull of Edmonton told the inquiry under Judge Roger Kerans that the bank loaned a total of to 19 shareholders in P.A.P. Holdings Ltd., Cosmopolitan's parent company, but he denied any impropriety. Michael Lux of Grande Prairie, a former P.A.P. director who, sold his farm to the conglomerate, has testified that the bank loaned on behalf of the farm to a P.A.P. officer who didn't have signing authority for the farm. Mr. Lux said half the money was put into P.A.P., and when he himself borrowed from the bank a week later he was not told of the original loan.
