MARCH LISTINGS FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 23 TO FRIDAY, MARCH 29 The Overlanders The unsung heroes and heroines of Can- ada's past loom large in a CBC-TV film drama, The Overlanders, for telecast on Monday, p.m. The 90-minute color film, shot on location in the British Columbia interior, tells the exciting story of a small band of "ordinary people" who, in 1862, set out to cross the I m passable Rockies, heading for Barkerville, centre of the Cariboo gold rush of that era. Though the film is fiction, the story is real enough, basqd on diaries of real people who made that incredible journey on foot. Above, "The Overlanders" for a moun- tain stream. It was determination that kept Schuck fighting for acting roles which eventually led to his current success as Rock Hudson's sidekick in "McMillan Wife." And it was determination that kept him on a serious diet. Schuck dropped from 235 to 185 pounds. "I lost five inches off my waistline and three sizes in my clothing he said happily. He was candid about why he went on a diet. "For one thing, I felt unattractive. For another, I felt bad, physically." The actor stands at six feet and half an inch. Rock Hudson measures six feet, four inches. But now that Schuck is slimmer, he feels taller. Noting, that his work schedule was not conducive to dieting, Schuck explained he began his regimen during a production hiatus last summer, losing 40 pounds. Since returning to work on "McMillan he has shed another ten pounds. "It's just a matter of re- educating he explained. "I get to eat three meals a day but I watch my starches. I can't use any sugar, and bread is my starch substitute." To help along his "re-learned" dietary habits, he swims and plays tennis. Schuck, who confessed he dated girls with a penchant for cooking, still dates. "There's no interference he said with a chuckle. "I just eat cautiously." Documentary of Jerusalem "Each of us in his way lives in two cities his own and Jerusalem." The words are from the opening sequences of CBC-TV film of epic proportions. Next Year in Jerusalem, to be telecast on the network March 26, at 8 p.m. they are spoken by Lome Greene, who appears as on-camera narrator. The documentary-drama by Harry Rasky, who wrote it as well as produced and directed it, was filmed in Israel last summer, with an impressive roster of international stars: Lome Greene, Sam Jaffe, John Colicos, Barry Morse, Joseph Yadin and Toby Robins, and the glorious solo voice of Maureen Forrester. The 90-minute film, in superlative color, unfolds some years of history of the Holy City, and the starring actors portray historical figures whose lives were threads in the multicolored fabric of the ancient city. The historical canvas is immense, stretching from the days of Abraham and Isaiah to the present. Rasky also acquired the services of one of the world's greatest contraltos, Maureen Forrester, to sing off- screen (and for the sound track) excerpts from Bach's St. Matthew Passion and famous Hebrew chant, Kol Nidre.
