Tlic report ws.- prepared by a scientific advisory committee and released Simlay by the White House office of science and Consumer advocate Nader la- belled the report "a mockery of scientific imcgrily and compet- ence and a penny-ante carica- ture of think tank studies." SOl'llf E' Ford president Lee lacccca called it "a valuable source of information on the cost- effectiveness and practicability of regulations thai affect the fu- ture welfare of all Americans." The reiwrt estimated that per cent of all vehicles are in areas where automobile exhaust pollution is not a problem. It estimated that the average increase in the retail price of an automobile by 1970 would be S350 for compliance with emis- sion control, pins 5523 for meet- ing safety standards. "Put in o'.her the panel said, "about tliree out of even' to pui'C-hascrs of new au- tomobiles of I'lTC vintage will be paying a large, extra initial cost aral higher operating expense for stringent emission control features which may be unneces- sary in their areas." Nader said the vehicle popula- tion is sold or resold every tlirco years, and 20 per cent of the population moves every ycar. "Combining these two factors with moiorins trips from one re- gioA to another precludes any cost-effective administration of such a two-ear Nader said. STANFORD, Calif. (AP) The telltale biochemical linger- pi'ints of a suspected humnn cancer virus have heen found in the healthy relatives and friends of cancer victims, a scientist [says. The discovery supports a still nnproven iciea that some, can- ccrs might hn transmitted from person to person by a virus. Dr. S. Kingsley Sanders of the Sloan Institute for Cancer Research in New York discussed here the results of the institute's latest work with scientists from It countries meeting at Stanford University for a on Ilodgkin's disease -cancer of the lym- phatic system. I Sanders and his colleagues re- i ported last September evidence that two different virus-like par- tides exist in cancer cells taken from Hodgkin's disease paticnls i and grown in the laboratory. The scientists said then the next step was to test relatives, friends and others close to Ilodgkin's disease victims for i antibodies to the cancer vims particles. Antibodies would Ire produced by the body's natural defence mechanism after expo- sure to the virus and would be fingerprints of the vims' pres- ence. lie stressed ill an interview that there still is no conclusive evidence the virus particles cause llodgkin's disease. The immediate importance of [the findings, Sanders said, is that scientists now have a pow- erful tool to lest large papula- lions for evidence of the virus particles. Such data then could be correlated with geographic I and environmental factors that seem to influence the disease. Last June researchers at Al- bany. N.Y., Medical College and the New York state health de- partment reported what ap- peared to be "an extended epi- demic" of Hodgkin's disease. j They found 13 cases resulting from one student in the Albany high school class of 1954 and reaching through a complicated maze of friends, relatives and classmates. ffl SIMPSONS-SEARS IT PAYS TO PAINT RIGHT NOW WHEN YOU CAN SAVE MONEY LIKE THIS Project timing important ve Cut Our Velvet Latex Wall Finish by a Gallon 4o99 Gal.
