(CP) Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. thinks it may have come up with one answer to the problem of finding people to" work on a remote mining operation: hire women. For the past four nonths, the firm has been using women in a variety of jobs requiring skill and strength and company vice-president Peter Cain says the experiment is going well. Mr. Cain, who suggested last November that women be given equal work opportunities with men inr mining, and fellow company official W. F. Clarke both say women's liberation isn't the issue. Both men are more concerned about maintaining a good work force in the face of expected tough competition from jobs offering top wages and plenty of overtime in pipeline construction and Alberta tar sands de- velopment. "We knew that women could do the said Mr. Clarke. "We have seen them do it in wartime and in other countries. So why not give them a chance in the mining industry' Working at the Ruttan open mine near here the women tackled their assignments with enthusiasm, determined to prove their worth in a male- dominated field.
