Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - March 21, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD ThurMtey, March 21, 1974 Methadone deaths top heroin fatals By M. A. FARBER New York Times Service NEW YORK Methadone surpassed heroin as a definite cause of narcotics deaths here in the first half of 1973 while the total number of narcotics deaths fell substantially, Or. Dominick J. DiMaio, the city's acting chief medical examiner has disclosed. Although the number of deaths attributable to methadone has been a subject of controversy for several years, never before has a senior medical examiner here indicated that these deaths were more than a relatively small proportion of all narcotics deaths in the city. Earlier this week the chief toxicologist of New Jersey reported that, for the first time, more people in that state were dying of methadone than of heroin or other narcotics. Figures from Connecticut were unavailable. Dr. DiMaio said that, between January >and June last year, 50 persons here clearly died of methadone, a synthetic narcotic used in the treatment of over addicts in the city. In the same period, 49 persons definitely died of heroin. In sum, DiMaio said, there were 329 narcotics deaths in the first six months of 1973, compared with 521 in the first half of 1972 and 443 in the beginning of 1971. Of the 329 deaths, he said, 186 bodies contained heroin and 143, methadone. But DiMaio included in the heroin death category 104 cases in which methadone, as well as heroin, was found in the bodies. None of the 104 cases was included in the methadone death group. "We feel that, in these cases, the people started on heroin and then added the medical examiner said in an interview. CAREERS Slaying of seven prominents in Jamaica prompts conference KINGSTON, JAMAICA (Reuter) The recent shooting deaths of at least seven prominent citizens on this holiday island has prompted top-level security talks here. The talks Wednesday between government ministers and police follow weekend consultations between Prime Minister Michael Manley and top officers of Jamaica's defence force and the police high command. Four of the seven were shot dead in the last two weeks in street killings, bringing mounting public pressure for effective measures to halt the crime wave here and in the tourist centre of Montego Bay. Manley this week set up a new ministry of national security and justice to co- ordinate the fight against crime1. Three of the seven well- known persons killed in the last three months have been lawyers. One was philanthropist businessman Leo Horatio Henry, a table tennis official who toured with the national team to New York and Peking last year. Another victim was Paul Fitz-Ritson, 30, chairman of Jamaica's National Spores Ltd., who promoted the world heavyweight boxing match between Joe Frazier and George Foreman here in January. After Fitz-Ritson was gunned down by two armed robbers in Montego Bay last Saturday, Manley said there is widespread revulsion among Jamaicans over the recent killings. In most cases there have been no arrests. WHALE Don't miss David tank's report, complete with color pictures, on an expedition of whale watchers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
