Liv Ullmann is in demand By BAKRY NORMAN Dispatch of The Times, London LONDON Miss Llv Ull- mann is currently tho lioltest property, in films. This is a vul- gar phrase coined by Vulgar people but it is a very graphic one and what it means is that a Hollyy.'ood producer has an important female role to cast he says, indistinctly ard with a mouthful of cigar, "Get Ullmann." This month she will be seen In London in a Swedish film, "Tho Emigrants" (for which she is nominated for an aca- demy and In Ross Hunter's new, musical version of "Lost Horizon." And when that double dose of brouhaha has died down she will return to American to film "40 Car- nts" for Mike Frank ovi tch, "Taylor's Bride" with Gene Hackman, and "Queen Cris- which begins where the celebrated Garbo picture left off. Miss Ullmann, 34 years old, Is Norwegian and is, at pres- ent, playing in Ibsen's "Brand" at a theatre in Oslo. She finds the commotion now being cre- ated around her rather inter- esting and explains it thus: "Good things go in waves; so do bad things. At the moment my wave is just going by. When it passes anoUter will come along with a different actress on the top and she will become the girl everybody wants." Miss Ullmann is an eminently, sensible young woman, unlike- ly, I think, to be adversely af- fected by all the attention that is being concentrated upon her. ONCE REJECTED When she was 18 she was re- jected by a stage school in Oslo on the grounds that she had no talent. She was somewhat shat- tered by this because she was fairly firmly convinced that sho was a genius. This belief (no longer held, I may add) had come upon her quite young when she discovered that, Uwugh uncommunicative and shy in conversation, sho could Iwld people's attention by re- citing poetry to them. Consequently she determined to become an actress even though acting, hi her Norwe- gian circles, was regarded fa sinful and not noticeably more respectable than street walk- ing. Even when rejected by her stage school and, on her own admission, broken hearted she lost none of her ambition and worked her way up from provincial stage companies to Norway's national theatre and a few films, made strictly for homo consumption. She had, in fact, been an ac- tress for eight years without getting anywhere very remark- able. On a street corner in Stockholm a chance meeting with Ingemar Bergman began an association that led to such films as "Hour of the "Shame" aa dmost recently "Cries and Whispers." out all over at SAFEWAY CAT FOOD We think you'll like this exciting way to welcome spring.
